Sporting Edge MPCC News 06/02/21

Congratulations to Masood "Max" Chakari (512) whose 37 runs Saturday for the MP Div.7 Gold side in a good win against Prebbleton at Prebbleton Domain saw him become the 3rd MPCC batsman to pass 500 runs this season. Max completed a good allround day by taking 4 for 9 off his 8 overs in the 2nd innings.

Congratulations to Jacob Wilson (104) whose 5/57 off 18.1 for the MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI helped bowl Heathcote out for 154 in the 1st innings of their two-day game at Hillsborough Domain on Saturday and took him past 100 Division 1 (Senior B) wickets for MPCC. MP claimed 1st innings points after passing the Heathcote total at the end of Day 1 and will be looking to press on for the outright win next week.

Match Reports from Saturday 6th February ...

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI vs Heathcote @ Hillsborough 1 (2-Day)(Day 1)

We arrived at a Hillsborough Domain pitch not really knowing how it was going to play, as last time it resembled a bit of a bomb site, with batsmen being hit from balls popping up from a length.  I won the toss and decided to have a bowl, trying to use the irregularities in the pitch to our advantage. Beattie and Ryno opened up with the new ball and were reasonably tidy with Ryno picking up an early wicket. Jacob then came on and got another breakthrough, altho was a little inconsistent! Cammy coming into the team for the first time then came on into the wind and immediately hit a length and suddenly the brakes were on. Heathcote were now struggling at 90 odd for 6 at lunch, with a really good post drinks session. We came out after the lunch break and got a couple of key wickets early which helped our cause but then back came the inconsistency that plagued us early on. We eventually bowled out Heathcote in the 60th over for 154 and Jacob (5/57) picking up his first 5 wicket haul for the season. Cam Norton (2/30) arguably the best bowler of the day however.

With about 40 minutes to bat before the tea break, I came out with Jono in his first game for the 1sts this season as well. We negotiated a few close calls to be unbeaten at tea. After the tea break, we got to 65 before I went for 33 and Jono and Aaron came out and carried on and set a steady platform. An unnecessary run out where Jono (28) lost his boot in the process, left us 2 down. Deeley (12) came and went after missing a straight one and then Humey (9), making his first appearance as well hit a couple of classy boundaries before missing a straight one also! Rory and Aaron steadied the last few overs, with Aaron 39 not out and Rory on 14 not out. We have a 2 run lead heading into the 2nd day, with 20 overs still to bat and 6 wickets in hand, so will be looking to gain a bit of a lead, before trying to bowl Heathcote out cheaply and go for outright points.  A solid day out for the boys, altho a little inconsistent with the ball, plenty of learning to come out from the day.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 2nd XI vs East Chch Shirley @ Bishopdale 1 (2-Day)(Day 1)

2nds met East Shirley at Bishopdale for the first day of a 2-dayer. With the usual combination of several 1s players deciding on a day off and calling up players and the 3s uninterested in helping out, we were grateful to Fish, Pickle, Dakesy and Russ for volunteering c. 200 years of experience and Mitch Dwyer for a comeback appearance. Comet won the toss and chose to bowl, which didn't work out well when Chris and Dave missed their lengths early. Chris improved, Dave didn't and was replaced by Josh Dyer, who picked up our first wicket, bowled, with the score on about 70 inside the first 10. Chris then drew an apparent nick which Comet took in front of first slip, but the umpire decided the batsman had hit the ground. Jaydyn, Russ and Fish all bowled well in tricky circumstances as the Easts Prem opener carved up and a couple of chances went begging, with Russ eventually picking up an lbw in a decent 1-30ish off 7. Fish's 0-22 off 6 was also respectable. At 233-2 at lunch, they were coasting. Dave came back as they started batting T20 style and picked up a bowled, and Mitch got a direct hit runout that ended the innings with Easts 265-4 off 46 declared.

Our batting effort saw Dakesy and Kyle depart after a few overs. Mitch (20) and Comet (10) looked good together for a while but fell in successive overs to a change bowler. Pickle (22) and Fish (21) had a nice partnership in the middle but died by the sword and things fell apart a bit with Jaydyn, Dave and Russ all returning for ducks as we were out for 98 with 21 overs left in the day. Following on, we lost Comet early. Kyle (2) battled hard with Mitch but got a nasty ball that trapped him lbw. Mitch looked great, getting to 39 before bunting a short wide ball to cover, leaving Dakesy (2* off lots) and Jaydyn (12*) at the crease and us at 59-3. More changes to come next week. Might give Heather some throw-downs just in case!

MP Division 4 vs Heathcote @ Edgar Mac 2 (Win)

The Div 4 Allstars found themselves on the hallowed turf of Edgar-Mac 2 this week pitted against the boys from the valley (Heathcote). Gilly's wrist was again too limp for the toss and we were surprisingly inserted as the opposition only had 6 present when the toss was done. Like any courier parcel these days though the rest of the them arrived late and we were soon in pursuit of a tally to defend. Batting wasn't easy early with a bit of inconsistent bounce hampering any early stroke play and ultimately led to Ash falling with the score at 5. Nana came out swinging more than Waimate on a Saturday night. He tried to up the rate but when he chopped on for 21 then Patto followed 7 runs later we were in a bit of trouble at 39 for 3. Gilly joined the promoted Matty Wilcock for a 31 run stand contributing 16 before he joined the growing list on the sideline and Bellsy joined Matty in the middle. These 2 started cautiously trying to build the score to over 100 before starting to play some shots. Matty proved his talent with the stick ending up out with about 2 overs to go for a fantastic 59 (92) playing the anchor role with Bellsy cashing in on some cheap runs at the end getting caught in the last over for 87 (67). Their 120 partnership seemed to break the back of the Heathcote bowling seeing us through to a daunting 212/6 off our 40.

Heathcote set about their task with all guns blazing and although some gimp at second slip couldn't accept a relatively easy offering they had us under pressure early. Jase eventually honed in on the sticks removing the danger man for 27 and then not long after Josiah sent the other opener packing and we were back in it. We applied some pressure over the next few overs which resulted in Ash keeping his calm to run out the next and we felt the flood gates were about to open. Gilly then made some changes and had Bellsy come on down wind  before he remembered how much of an athlete he is and changed him round to bowl into the face of the gale. Milky, having a break from dad duties, was next to strike to have them 4 down and from then on Bellsy mopped up the tail. At drinks Heathcote were well in the fight only needing 101 to win with 7 wickets left but crumbled in a heap to lose by 60.

Special mention to Matty 59 (92) for providing the glue in our innings to allow others to play some shots and I guess some credit to the old dude who only got 3 balls to turn all day but ended with 6-25 off 7.4 overs to go with his 87. 8 in a row for us now and with results over the last 2 weeks going our way we are now in a 3 way tie for 1st with 6 to go in the round robin.

MP Division 7 Gold vs Prebbleton @ Prebbleton 1 (Win)

Saturday afternoon saw us out at Prebbleton, against that same team. Losing the toss (again), they put us into bat on a, not unexpected, superbly prepared pitch. Another juggled batting lineup saw Phil opening up with our guest player, Wade. Unfortunately, we didn't get off to a great start, with Wade skying one to depart for 1, and myself departing not longer after that for a blob. In the face of accurate, if not lethal, bowling, the runs were coming painfully slowly as well - at one stage we were 11/2 after 11 overs. However, Phil and Thomas saw us through to 40 before Phil was bowled for a gritty 23, and we got through to drinks on 53/3. Thomas then combined with Max for a good partnership before Thomas was caught for a fine 42, 84/4. Hemanshu then came out and went about lifting the run rate, hitting 2 maximums before departing after a quickfire 21 - 108/5. Max and Will stayed together for another valuable partnership before Max was bowled for 37, 145/6. Sam G departed soon after for 1, 147/7, leaving Sam B and Will to see out the remaining balls of the innings. We ended up on 149/7 which, considering our extremely slow start, was a great recovery. Prebbleton bowled well in the conditions, only giving away 2 wides, and not a single bye.

Our turn in the field - and Prebbleton were in the unfortunate position of having 5 ring-ins, most of whom had barely held a cricket bat before. Unfortunately it showed - to Prebbleton's credit they at least gave them a guaranteed turn to bat, but it did end up being somewhat of a slaughter up front. Max and Dave opened the bowling, with the opening batsman unable to get within cooee of any of Max's deliveries. Max was also unfortunately unable to get any of them to hit the sticks either. So it was up to Dave to strike first, which he did on his very first delivery. Max then took the next 3, including being on yet another hat-trick, with Dave chipping in with another. Change of bowler, with Sam B replacing Dave. After getting a bit of stick, Sam eventually made the next breakthrough with a c&b, and it was pretty much one way traffic from there on. Max bowled out his full 8 trying to get another 5 for, which he was unable to do (just). Sam took another 2, Max 1, and Sam G finished it off with the second delivery of his first over, and the 17th over of the innings. So all out for 64, a win to us by 85 runs.

A good bowling effort, backed up by solid fielding and good catching (especially a couple from Dave, Thomas and Will). Max lead from the front with 4/9 from his 8, with Sam B leaking a few runs but still taking 3/21 from his 4. Dave also came in for some attention from his last couple of overs, ending with 2/34 from 4, and Sam rounded it out with 1/0 from 2 deliveries. A pretty one sided match in the end, but regardless of that it was played in excellent spirit with Prebbleton being great opponents and hosts. A good set-up for the conflict of the conquistadors this weekend, with the much anticipated Gold vs Panthers matchup, 3rd vs 4th!

MP Division 7 Panthers vs Richmond @ Walter 1 (Win)

Fourth win in a row! Panthers outplayed in all departments the Richmond Rhinos, resulted probably the biggest win for Panthers season. It was pleasant afternoon, Panthers won the toss and elected to bat first on artificial pitch at Walter Park which has quick outfield. But Panthers ain’t got the good start after losing openers very early. Rhinos failed to put pressure on new batsmen. Sunnie went on attacking mode playing big shots scoring maiden fifty for Panthers this season. Andy Richards started as supporting role to Sunnie, crushed bad balls. Both batsmen played well, were looking so aggressive and set good platform for Panthers. Panthers went for drinks at 90 for loss of two wickets. Very soon after drinks Sunnie got run-out after playing a good knock of 54. Rochie came to bat looked so confident after hitting massive six in deep but unfortunately got out scoring 16. Andy shifted his gear to next level, played beautiful shots got caught at deep after playing a real good knock of 85 runs, unfortunately missed an opportunity to score century. Debutant Pav was looking so confident but got out scoring 14 runs. Andy Anderson and Nick contributed well scoring 11 and 7 respectively in last few overs. Harsha came to bat in last over scored 9 runs. It was a great effort from Panthers batsmen setting up big target of 220 runs, not to mention few missed opportunities from opposition also helped Panthers to score few extra runs.

Andy and Jeet opened Panthers bowling attack, both bowled well as usual in great areas. Jeet bowled Rhino’s opener with a beautiful delivery. With the absence of Jonno and Clinton, captain Joel had limited options in bowling. Harsha and Nick came to bowl very early and Nick (2/19) got wicket in his first over. Both bowled well in nice areas, that didn’t allow Rhino’s batsmen to score freely. Those dot balls put pressure on opposition after making their required run rate skyrocket. Harsha finished his spell (0/18). With wickets in hand and their set batsmen at crease on artificial pitch, Ronnie’s magical spell crushed Rhinos winning chances. Ronnie (5/29) bowled extremely well got second 5-wicket haul this season. Other end Rochie (2/14) got wicket in his very first over bowling after ages. Jeet took 3 good catches in this innings, Andy Anderson, Rochie and Nick got one each. Dean behind stumps caught one and one stumping. Rhino’s got all out at 127, and that was biggest win by margin of 92 runs for Panthers this season.

Overall it’s a clinical performance of Panthers in both batting and bowling departments. But Panthers should work on improving their fielding standards. There were few catch drops, luckily that didn’t affect Panthers win. Hopefully Panthers will continue their winning streak on coming Saturday too, derby game vs Gold at Edgar Mac.

MP Beverage Brothers Presidents vs ECS Gold @ Edgar Mac 1 (Win)

A lovely, if not a little cool of a, day for a match on the #1 oval at MPCC. ES batted and the first 10 overs saw a quadruplet of dropped catches amongst some decent stroke play by Craig Gibb in partnership with Ralphy. The two put on plenty before the breakthrough in maybe the 22nd over. After that it was BAU by Craig as he made his way to three figures and then walked after gloving Nath towards the proximity of slip. He had been well supported by Barry who fell after smashing the ball flush into the non-striker’s thigh only to be run out off the deflection although I am uncertain that he actually apologised to Boyle (who lay amidst the carnage) as he traipsed off disappointedly. The end result was a score of 220ish for 5 anyway. Towny bowled especially well and left with 1 for 37 off his 7 overs and Kris Rowe was again very good at the top in conjunction with Nath. Tonka took a couple of wickets too.

The second half saw yours truly (after getting a peach of a ball from Tim) greatly enjoying watching much of a very good chase from the position of umpire. MP initially set out confidently with a neat 20 plus by Rowey and a well measured 30 plus by Mario however testing lengths by Garfield and Tim throughout the next stanza of the innings saw the outcome in the balance at drinks. After that, MP by and large demonstrated excellent control anchored around Mayo (40) and Grunter (69) with Tonka 27 not out and Kim 15 not out ticking past the target with at least an over to go.

Well done on this particular day to the boys in the yellow and darker blue and, once again, well batted Gibbo.
