Sporting Edge MPCC News 21/11/20

Congratulations to Grant Moore whose innings of 62 for the MP Beverage Brothers Presidents side on Saturday helped the side chase down 220 with 3 balls to spare against St Albans at Burnside 5 on Saturday. In the process Grant (1015) passed 1000 career runs for the club and also became the 9th MPCC player to score 1000 (1010) Presidents Grade runs.

Congratulations to MP Div.7 Gold player Masood "Max" Chakari whose bowling spell of 5 for 28 off 8 overs helped the side to a dominant win against Prebbleton on Saturday and became the best figures by an MPCC bowler of the season to date narrowly surpassing Ronnie Khuu's 5/29 taken just a week ago.

MPCC Trivia Night (Friday 20th November) ...

A big thank you to all those who attended last Friday night's MPCC Trivia Night and made it an extremely successful evening. With around 14 teams present there was plenty of banter, noise and competition with "Big Off Season" comprised of Lauren English, Sam Gardner, Kyle Sloane, Jono Collins, Aaron Chapman & Sam McDonnell taking home first prize along with the trophy and bragging rights so well done to them. It was great to see parents from the Junior side of the club making an appearance also and we thank them for their support.

A huge thank you to Quizmaster Sam Gillespie who put together the trivia questions and ran his first Trivia Night ... I hope he hasn't been too traumatised by the experience!!

Thank you also to Bellsy for his efforts organising raffle prizes and selling tickets which helped enhance the clubs fundraising effort for the night and to Juls as always for her efforts looking after the bar. Great effort team and we look forward to the next one.

Match Reports from Saturday 21st November ...

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI vs Sydenham @ Burwood 2 (T20)(Win)

We turned up to Burwood Park along with all the other teams in the grade for the first round of the 20/20 competition. Luckily enough we were on the number 2 for both games with some questionable sized boundaries.

Lingy won the toss and decided to bat first, we had a good aggressive start from Lingy and Tom Batty getting away to a flying start, with the first wicket going down for 56 off 5.4 overs Batty 11 (10). That brought to the crease James Deeley who after a blistering 100* the week before walked out then back in again skying a full toss on his first ball. We were still in a good position being 56/2 after 6 overs. Sydenham brought on some slower bowlers after the first powerplay and really started to slow us up and with that pressure came wickets. Rory Hawes 6 (16) caught on the boundary and Zac Medland 7 (11). Fortunately Lingy carried his form on from last week and although one end couldn’t get too many runs away he was managing to clip boundary after boundary until he decided that he was Usain Bolt and ran a single to the keeper who threw the stumps down and ran him out for 59 (42). The Chapman Duo were both caught out Jamie 13 (11) with 1 six in there and Aaron 3 (7). The tail did a bit of wagging to get us to a solid target on the small ground, Ryan Hawkins 13 (12), Sam Gillespie 2 (2), Chris McBride 7 (4) and Jacob Wilson 6* (7). Sydenham were our second best batsman giving us 36 extras with one over having about 13 balls in it going for 26. All out for 164 on the last ball we thought it was a par score with the small boundaries so we needed to make sure our bowling was strong.

Chris McBride opened the bowling but I can’t tell you how he went as Sydenham didn’t write his overs down but started pretty well… at the other end James Deeley opened with some darts which was a good payoff as they could not get him away with Deeley going for 12 runs off his 4 up the top, unfortunately no wickets. Jacob Wilson was brought on after Chris and got a wicket in each of his first 2 overs with 2 solid catches by Rory in the deep. Ryan Hawkins came on after Jacob and continued the tight bowling lines we had all been bowling and managed to snap up the other opener. Sam Gillespie came on after Deeley’s tight spell and decided that he wanted to get some fielding points rather than bowling points this game and ran out 2 batsmen backing up a bit too far, Sam ended up bowling his 4 overs for 26. Tom Batty came on and snapped up the left hander who was actually looking ok for Sydenham with a catch in the deep and also got a stumping, ending up with 2 for 14 off his 2 overs. Jacob came back on with a wicket first ball and missed a Hattrick by approximately 3mm, he ended up with 3 for 12 off his 3 overs. Ryan came back on and got himself another wicket and ended on 2/18 off his 4. Aaron got the last batsmen runout while they were attempting to come back for a second when they barely even got the first run…. We should be pretty happy with our bowling effort only giving away 2 wides.

Comprehensively beating Sydenham having them all out in the 18th over for 101 was a good start to the day and had our tails up heading into the next game. Special mention to Zac who filled in for Lingy keeping and also Michael Thorpe who came in to fill in from midday.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI vs Heathcote @ Burwood 2 (T20)(Loss)

Brimming with confidence after coming off a convincing win in the morning Captain Hawkins won the toss and decided to get some runs on the board to put the pressure on a strong Heathcote team. T.Batty and A.Chapman walked out to the middle and 3 balls later Chapman was walking back after a beauty of a ball hit his gloves then down onto his stumps and dislodged the bails. J.Deeley entered the crease but on his very first ball was struck infront of the wickets by an inswinging yorker and was sent on his way. Not the start we were looking for, ending up 2 down for 1 run after the first over. This situation just got worse when the next over T.Batty was also caught on the pads infront of the stumps then Z.Medland followed suit an over later and was sent on his way. 3 overs completed, 3 runs for 4 wickets, put us in desperate need for a partnership and J.Chapman alongside R.Hawes knuckled down and started to slowly get the scoreboard ticking until Hawes played around a straight one for 14 leaving the score at 58-4. R.Hawkins came and went for 4 before Chapman did his absolute best to put ex-teammate J.Dyer over the fence 200m away and was bowled for a very impressive and well needed 51 runs. At this stage we were 88-7 with S.Gillespie coming to the crease for another hopeful saviour innings and that is exactly what he delivered scoring an impressive 24 runs of 20 balls including some stunning shots. C.McBride scored 4 runs trying to stay with Gillespie before being caught and then J.Wilson stayed with Gillespie until the end of innings. J.Chapmans incredible innings gave us a glimmer of hope and a foot in the door if we bowled well enough to defend 131 runs on small boundaries.

Opening the bowling C.McBride started off strong building pressure with his first over only going for 1, then J.Deeley follow up and 5th ball got our first wicket. This got the boys revved up but then a strong partnership took Heathcote to 54 before the next wicket fell. Not long after we picked up another wicket making the score 62-3 and with lots of edges going past Medland and some half opportunites missed we still had hope. Then B.Cochrane decided he wanted to start putting the ball over the boundary and took the game away from our grasp making a very fast 60 runs including a massive 6. It was a hard fought battle but at the end of the day we just didnt have enough runs on the board to be able to defend, especially with how small the boundaries were.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 2nd XI vs Halswell @ Burwood 3 (T20)(Loss)

2nds began our T20 campaign at Burwood with games against Halswell and East Shirley. Comet lost the toss vs Halswell and we batted first. We started pretty well despite losing pinch-hitter Mike Beattie (8) early after one big six. Comet (22) and Toby Beale (20) making his first appearance of the season got us to 40 in the eighth over before Comet was caught trying to take on Primmer and then Kyle Sloane boofed a 6, got told by a fielder that he should have opened the batting and was then LBW next ball. Nonetheless, things still looked OK at 71-3 in the 12th over when the wheels fell off as we slumped to 79-8 by the end of the 15th. Nikhil nicked for 16, Abhi ran himself out on a reverse sweep; Sunnie was caught first ball and a bizarre concatenation of circumstances saw Kyle Bradbury standing at the non-striker’s end with Basa, having hit the ball to the boundary for what he thought was an easy single. Determined to redeem himself, Basa had a go at rescuing the innings in a partnership with Dave that got us to 106 before Basa, after 3 sixes, hit one aerial shot too many. Dave followed for 4 soon after, failing to clear the trees and we were 108 all out after 19 with Jaydyn 1*. The less said about the bowling effort that followed the better. We got one wicket from a good high catch by Jaydyn off Abhi’s bowling, but all the bowlers got put away pretty convincingly by Jeet (50*) and Johnston (27*) and the innings was over inside 12 overs.

Dave M

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 2nd XI vs East Chch Shirley @ Burwood 1 (T20)(Loss)

Into game 2 vs Easts, and this time we were put in the field, with a dropped Prem opener to welcome Mike Beattie. After hitting Mike for a couple of boundaries, he nicked off a regulation slip catch that our slip dropped 3 times, and then proceeded to punish our attack with 66 runs. Mike (1-27 off his 4) bowled well at the top, but Comet struggled to find any other consistent bowling until Basa came into the attack. Bowling good lines, he kept things fairly cheap, and got the Prem wicket with his worst ball of the spell – a long hop caught at 45 by short Kyle. Basa eventually ended up with 1-26. Unfortunately, the other 12 overs went for about 150 between the various unsuccessful bowlers. Jaydyn was a touch unlucky to have Entwistle (69*) dropped a couple of times. Nikhil came back and bowled quite well in the death overs (by which time Easts were bashing everything) and picked up a wicket via a deep catch by Abhi, but Easts ended up 208-3 off their 20.

Our batting didn’t look promising with both openers, Abhi and Mike, back in the hutch with the score on 9. Comet then shared a couple of decent partnerships with Toby (16) and short Kyle (21) before both departed caught. Comet upped the tempo, scoring 37 off 30 before being bowled with the score at 94-5 in the 10th. Basa (14 off 9) and tall Kyle (22 off 20) also played some good attacking cricket and we got the score up to a creditable 140 before Jaydyn was last man out at the beginning of the 20th over. The damage had been well and truly done in the first innings, unfortunately. So, two quite heavy defeats – we’re still working around multiple fitness issues, but are unlikely to prosper if we miss the chances that come our way. Bowling and batting both need to be a little smarter too. How good’s cricket!

Dave M

MP Division 4 vs St Albans @ Hagley 4 (Win)

Saturday was a lucky day for skipper Gilly and for the whole team. Gilly lost the toss and it was a good toss to lose as we bowled first. It was overcast when we started the play. Jason and Mani opened the bowling attack with a tight line and length. Opposition batsmen were looking solid for the first few overs. Mani bowled a few loose deliveries in his first over, but he managed to knick-off the batsman in his second over and picking up the first wicket for his team. It was a good 5 overs spell from both Mani and Jason and then skipper gave bowl to Josiah and Matty. Josiah started his first over pretty well but Matty went for few runs as he started with few short of length deliveries. Gilly maintained his trust in both of them even when Josiah was going for few runs. Josiah bowled one no-ball and the batsman told umpire to signal a no-ball which angered him and few other players. That was the turning point in the game and Josiah picked up 2 crucial wickets. Ranjith was also sharp in the field and he ran out Smiley when Matty bowled a quick full-length delivery which hit Smiley on the toe and he was outside his crease with having no idea that Ranjith was running towards wickets to run him out. Bellsy also picked up one wicket in his 4 overs and Blair (Wilmott) was bowling from the other end. Blair was a replacement for injured Nana and that worked out pretty well. Blair picked up three quick wickets in his first two overs and finished with the impressive figures of 4 for 10 in his 3.5 overs. St Albans were all out for 98 in 28.5 overs.

Merivale started chasing the target when conditions were batting friendly as it was hot and sunny now. Ash and Patto started us well until Ash was hit in front of the wickets and lost his wicket and scored 6 in 10 balls. Patto’s luck was with him as he was dropped in the slips when he was batting in single digits. After the loss of Ash, Darren came out to crease at number 3 and he was middling every ball. Darren and Patto were running well between the wickets and they were converting one’s into two’s and ran some three’s too. After having a partnership of 40 odd runs between Patto and Darren, Patto lost his wicket and he made 22 in 31 balls. Skipper Gilly promoted Josiah to number 4 and gave him the opportunity to bat with his father. That worked as a great move as they both batted very well and bring us home with the loss of only two wickets. Josiah was 20 not out and Darren was 45 not out. Josiah’s six was also bigger than Darren’s and probably the biggest in match too!

It was wonderful to see us winning the game after three recent losses. We did well in all three areas of game and Gilly was proactive in his approach. Let’s keep the momentum and have few more wins before Christmas break.

MP Division 7 Gold vs Prebbleton @ Edgar Mac 1 (Win)

It was with great excitement that the Div 7 Gold team arrived at the hallowed # 1 Edgar Mac ground, to face Prebbleton. And it was a picture of perfection, a depiction of delight. The pitch looked immaculate, the outfield a billiard table. It was a combination that demanded batting first, which Sam duly obliged to effectuate by winning the toss. Our opening partnership of Dave and Max set an excellent platform, getting us past 10 overs without losing a wicket. Max was again in fine form before being caught for 37, bringing out Tommo. Dave was solid before being dismissed by an absolute screamer of a catch for 18, bringing myself to the crease. We went to drinks only two wickets down, so a good platform had been set. After drinks Tommo was fired by Sam, who was in a seemingly very generous LBW mood, for 18. Devender and myself stuck around for a bit until I was bowled for 35, which brought Will to the crease. Devender was caught for 18, and Will for 19, after both of them played some fine boundary strokes. Hemanshu didn't last long for 4, and it was left to Sammy G (17*) and Phil (4*) to see out the innings which ended on 186/7 - a pretty good effort, and our best score for the season on a grass pitch.

As had been the case in almost all our prior games, it was a total that if we bowled and fielded well, we were confident we could defend, even though it was clearly a superb batting pitch. Max and Sammy G opened the bowling, and immediately started to make inroads. In fact, there is actually very little to write about with regards to our efforts with the ball  - Prebbleton never even got started. Both Max and Sammy G were on the money from virtually the first ball, but it was Max who reaped the rewards. Wickets fell at very regular intervals, with Max sitting on a hat-trick (unconverted) at one point. Sam B replaced Sammy G after his 4 overs, and took a wicket first, and second, balls. His hat-trick ball was a shocker (unlike Max's), but regardless, there was no respite for Prebbleton. It was all over in the 16th over, with Prebbleton dismissed for 61, giving us our first win of the season by 125 runs. Sammy G ended with 1/18 from his 4, Sam B 3/12 from 4.1, and Max an outstanding 5/28 from his 8 (club best for the season to date). Sam B also provided a runout. Our fielding was never put under much pressure, as there was very little in the way of stroke-play from the batsmen, but when the ball did come to hand we were solid.

So an excellent all round performance from the boys, against a team some way ahead of us in the table as well. Sets us up nicely for the game of the season against the Panthers next week!

MP Beverage Brothers Presidents vs St Albans @ Burnside 5 (Win)

Beverage Bros Pressies travelled to the wind swept Burnside Park to take on St Albans. It was Presidents day so all the wickets were used by the Presidents grade teams. We were the lucky ones (not) as we were drawn on 5a which was an Artificial wicket out the back. Anyway my form with the toss continued and despite only having 8 players there and the team telling me to bat, I chose to field.

Saints came out with purpose and latched on to anything wayward early. They raced to 54/0 after 10 and a large score looked on the cards. We pegged it back a bit, took a couple of wickets and at drinks they were 89/2. When Donut caught Hampton soon after we felt that we were back in the game. As it was two 50+ partnerships by Saints got them to 220/5 at the end of their overs. Not a bad effort considering their start. Wicket takers were Rowe 8-50-1, Foord 6-30-2, Hastings 5-25-1 and Dyer 8-30-1.

In to bat we went with Grunta and Mario. They did a fantastic job and when Mario (23) fell we were 86 in the 19th over. Grunta departed 2 overs later for a very good 62. Towny (1) followed soon after and the in form Zane (17) fell to a great one hander. 121/4 after 27. 100 needed off 13. About this time the wind change kicked in and to be fair it aided us by making the short boundary even shorter. Ice and Donut got us to 170 before Donut (30) missed a straight one. 51 off 6 became 50 off 5 due to a tight 35th over. Ice and Tonka took to the task of getting us home. 10 off the 36th and 37th overs. 8 off the 38th and 39th left us 14 to get off the last. With the usually frugal Mason bowling it seemed like a tough task. Don't tell that to Tonka though. Once again he delivered in getting us over the line in a tight game. Masons first 3 balls to Tonka went 6,6,2, and we got there with 3  balls left. Ice was superb in getting 42no and Tonka was magic (3x6,3x4) with his 37no.

So after a slow start we finally got our first win and Mario got to learn the words of the club song. We are improving each week and if our bodies can hold together I'm sure more success will follow.

MP Presidents Gold vs Ohoka @ Burnside 3 (Loss)

MPCC Gold took on the new lads from Ohoka at Burnside 3 at another excellently run Presidents day. Richie maintained his losing streak with the toss and we were asked to have a field in developing hot conditions. For a while it appeared that losing the call might have been a good thing as Crimpy ripped through Ohoka's top order with three quick wickets, nailing Nick Burnett (0) in the first over, collecting Marty Thompson (0) via Pricey's mobility behind the stumps, then inducing a false stroke from John Hamilton (12) who dollied a simple chance to Hume in the covers. Things improved as Dearsley got into the action bamboozling Archer (12) with super slowness top edging to Badger at slip. When Andy Scott planted one to Hume off Millar for 17, we were right in the box seat, drinks showing 62/5, Graeme Johnson and Craig Prebble at the crease. Both opening bowlers doing an admirable job containing and breaking through, Crimp 8/2/17/3 and Dearsley 8/1/25/1. After drinks brought more misery to Ohoka as Pickle picked up a belligerent Johnson caught at point by Crimp for 15, then Millar grabbing his second trapping Cuthbertson infront for 2... 72/7. Then it started to fall apart, we got a case of the dropsies, which Prebble and Joe Harris took toll of. Some brutal batting, primarily to the legside boundaries, picked up the scoring rate and it wasn't until the late introduction of Price did we achieve what we need to do and finally effect a catch. That was of Harris (21), Mayo swallowing a swirling steepler at midwicket 121/8. Pricey grabbed a second bowling Gardner for 5, but Prebble continued to blast away riding some poor fielding and bringing up his half century. Unfortunately for us he just keep going as he took Price's last over (and final over of the innings) for 22 to end up unbeaten on 81*, Andre Davis surviving some testing balls to stay with him 1*. Ohoka pulling a Houdini and posting 177/9 after being in a massive hole. Millar bowled his 8 on the go picking up 8/1/20/2, others were too expensive to mention.

Seeing the deck seemed to hold true, we went out with the intention to occupy, take the runs that were on offer and generally not play the way we had all season. This seemed to worked to some degree, as Richie and Dearsley put on 23 at a fairly sedate pace but with not a lot of chances, the luck ran out for Mayo when on 6 tapping into the cover region got caught one handed by Thompson roving in the area. This brought in Hume who set about trying to reclaim the form he had shown the previous day. The boys took it to drinks at 61/1, all of the Ohoka bowlers keeping it very tight and making scoring tough. In the 24th (Harris's final over) Hume was undone by a brute of a ball spitting off a good length, catching a fine edge through to Scott, Humey to his credit put the bat under the arm and walked off for 17. I joined Paul, just in time to see him walk off 4 balls later being scuttled by Prebble for a well compiled 44 off 89. Two new batsmen at the crease and the run rate climbing Crimp and Pickle tried to run us into a better position. Pity we found the field a little to much and not the gaps we were looking for, as we only posted 20 off 5 overs, when I chased a legside shot and top edged to keeper Scott backing away for 6. Price strode to the crease, then Crimp (15) strode back to the sideline as he too fell to a legside top edge off Cuthbertson. Badger in for a good time, couldn't make it a long time departed for 6 playing over the top of an Archer straight ball, which gave Millar a turn to wave the willow. Price and Millar, determined to make a game of it, rode their luck at times but brought some respectability to our score, both bringing up personal best scores this season, Millar remaining not out 21*(19) and Pricey playing to his potential knocking his second 30 plus score in two weeks finishing 37* (26). Pity we were still well short of the target, finishing up 154/6 off our alloted overs, but this seemed to be inline with the days games where the batting first teams seem to dominate the wins column.

Ohoka are a very competitive side with a lot of cricketing tactics in their arsenal, proving to be just too good for us this time round, so looking forward to the rematch later in the season.
