A very good day for both MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI skipper Matt Ling & teammate James Deeley which unfortunately came at the expense of the MP Sporting Edge Div.1 2nd XI in the 2nd derby of the one-day campaign at Edgar Mac 1 on Saturday. The pair shared an unbroken 3rd wicket partnership of 217 in 30.3 overs after coming together with the score at 126 after 19.3 with Matt (154*) carrying his bat throughout the 50 overs to record his 3rd century and highest score for the club and James (102*) making his 2nd century of the season.
Congratulations to MP Div.4 Allrounder Glen Bellam (5002) whose innings of 17 in a tight loss against Richmond at Bishopdale Park took him past 5000 career runs for MPCC.
Congratulations to MP Div.7 Panthers batsman Andy Richards (3005) whose 49 not-out in a good win against the Heathcote Afghan XI at Nunweek Park took him past 3000 career runs for MPCC. Andy has been in great form in 2020/21 with scores of 11, 44*, 46*, 42 & 49* to date and giving him the Bradmanesque average of 96.00.
Congratulations to MP Div.7 Panthers bowler Ronnie Khuu who took 5 for 29 off 7.2 overs Saturday against the Heathcote Afghan XI in a good win at Nunweek Park. Ronnie's figures were the best by an MPCC bowler for the season to date.

Match Reports from Saturday 14th November ...
MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI vs MP Sporting Edge Div.1 2nd XI @ Edgar Mac 1 (1-Day)(Win)
The derby match started out with the forecast for a hot day and so it proved! Little wind and bright sun greeted us at Edgar Mac. The 2nds team was ready and had everything set out for their warm up before we arrived and looked in the zone.
I won the toss and decided to have a bat first, as we have done through the one day competition this year. So Tom Batty and I walked out to face the music first up. We got off to a solid start against Beattie and Sloane before Beattie got the breakthrough, with Batty going for a well made 19 off 28 deliveries. That brought Rory to the crease and with it the banter increased. We managed to get through the opening spell and Rory took a liking to Dave and decided to up the tempo. Arbi came on and started to control the pace of the game and got the breakthrough in the 20th over, with Rory edging behind for 29 (38). This brought Deeley to the crease, confident in the knowledge that Mel wasn't on the sideline cheering him on! The sun had really heated up by now and the bowlers and fielders were starting to tire. This gave a platform for Deeley and I to both make unbeaten hundreds. 154 (139) for myself and Deeley bringing his up in the final over to be 102 (97), aided by a very English "we won't bring up the world cup" 5, that he kicked to the boundary from a throw in from the outfield, early in his innings. This gave us a very competitive 343/2 off our 50 overs.
After a bit of a break from the sun, the breeze started to come out, with the comfort levels increasing slightly. The 2nds got off to a good start gettin to 60 before losing Ash 29 (37). Arbi went soon after for a well compiled 24 (43) and then Nikhil (3-30) got his 3rd wicket of Captain Comet for 15 (12) after some lusty blows. Tom Batty got his first Merivale wicket in Kyle Bradbury 2 (5) and then soon after had Sloane for a very patient 7 (36). The wickets were starting to fall at regular intervals with Sam Gillespie bowling well (2-27 off 10) and Batty (2-19 off his 7), until Batty got hit out of the attack with a massive 6 from Russ. Some lower order resistance especially from Dave Monger with 21* off 20 balls, should see him moving up the order for the T20s starting this weekend. 2nds eventually being bowled out in 45 overs for 161.
So a good day out for the 1s and builds confidence heading into the T20s this weekend. Still a few things to keep working on, but the team is improving and heading in the right direction. The game was played in good spirits and we have also seen a lot of improvement in the 2s, since the first game we played them.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 2nd XI vs MP Sporting Edge Div.1 1st XI @ Edgar Mac 1 (1-Day)(Loss)
MP 2nds were comprehensively beaten by MP 1sts. Matt Ling won the toss and put us in the field on a hot, airless morning. They scored briskly throughout, losing their first wicket for 59 and their second for 126. Thereafter, Lingy and James Deeley cashed in on some loose bowling and fielding errors to bring up 154* and 102* respectively in a 200+ partnership. Both gave chances but none were taken. In a pretty poor effort, Abhi Paudel’s 1-29 off 10 (which might have been 3 or 4 with better fielding) was creditable, while Kyle Bradbury ran his legs off for most of the innings, covering lots of ground and diving around in tough conditions.
Our innings started reasonably, with Abhi and Ash Reddy putting up 60 for the first wicket at a pace not too far behind the first innings. However, when Ash (29) chipped one back straight and Abhi (24) was cleaned up a couple of overs later, both wickets for Nikhil Dogra, the wheels started to fall off. The 1sts worked their way through some bowling options as we straggled slowly to 99/6 by the 30th over. A bit of late hitting from the tail made the scoreline a touch more respectable at 161 all out at the end of the 45th over, sadly still 182 short of the 343 target. Credit to the 1sts, whose batters capitalised on a poor fielding effort, before bowling and fielding efficiently themselves. We’ll pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, go to the physio or apply some deep heat and have better days this season, hopefully starting with next week’s T20s. It would certainly help our cause if the selectors had closer to a full complement of players to select from for the two Div 1 teams in the coming weeks. 1sts have a better chance of going up if the 2nds can take some points off other teams along the way.

MP Division 4 vs Richmond @ Bishopdale 1 (Loss)
Saturday saw us taking on Richmond Rhino's at Bishopdale Park. Beautiful hot day saw an intriguing game of cricket play out with the result coming down to the final over.
MP batted first after losing the toss, [Gilly needs to change the coin or something]. Nana was a late withdrawal as he pinched a nerve in his back while lifting the most important bit of equipment into the car, the gas bottle for our after match bbq. Fortunately, our Div.7 Gold team was able to lend us yet another player, who we want to acknowledge and the club for their support.
Our innings didn't start too flash as we lost Patto (1) and Nibbles (0) cheaply. This brought in Masood Chakari who made batting look easy alongside Ranjith (Bro). Bro put on a nice wee cameo before being caught for 21 off 16, Josiah then was bumped up the order to 5 as Gilly went for a timely trip to the loo. Masood and Josiah batted well through to drinks only for Josiah to throw his wicket away for 18 shortly after resuming play. Gilly came and went followed shortly by Masood who had a great knock of 45 leaving us at 90-6. Wickets kept falling but Hemanshu gave us a glimpse of hope for a better total with a quickfire 14 off 7 smashing 2 big sixes, one down the ground and one flat over mid wicket only to fall the next ball leaving Merivale all out for 129.
Our bowlers did a top job considering the number of runs they had to work with. Was great to see Matty Wilcock back in action for 8 tidy overs picking up 2 crucial wickets (2-17). Masood put on a clinic for us and his YouTube fans bowling 8 overs 2-23 (extremely unlucky not to get 3). Bellsy also bowled well with figures of 1-15 off his 8 overs. The boys were sharp in the field with Ranjith almost taking a screamer off Jason's bowling and Josiah combining with Gilly for a great runout. However it proved not enough as Richmond got there 8 down with 1 ball to spare!!
Finished the day the best way possible with Nana cooking the bbq, having a drink and some good yarns all round. Bring on next week!

MP Division 7 Gold (Bye)
MP Division 7 Panthers vs Heathcote Afghan XI @ Nunweek 1 (Win)
The Panthers bowled first on a typically rough looking Nunweek Park pitch. Jatinder (1/6 from 6) and Clinton (0/18 from 4) both started with excellent spells. Jatinder in particular bowled tight to an aggressive opener, eventually bowling him. After this breakthrough, the Heathcote batsmen settled into a partnership which was broken by Jonathan (1/10 from 5) during another tight spell just before drinks. After drinks, Joel brought on the spinners and the Heathcote batsmen could not resist aggressive shot making. Ronald (5/29 from 7.2) showed his genuine wicket taking abilities in the best bowling spell of the season, including a beauty to bowl the opener who was set on 42 runs. Nick (3/42 from 7) supported Ronald at the other end and benefitted from Heathcote’s aggressive decision making. Both bowlers were aided by some excellent ground fielding, with Dean taking two sharp stumpings and Harsha an excellent boundary catch. Joel and Jonathan also caught infield catches. The Panthers bowled out Heathcote in 34.2 overs for 138 runs.
Despite the excellent bowling effort, we knew it can be difficult to chase at Nunweek Park. Heathcote tried to exploit any uneven bounce with short-pitched bowling from one end, a tactic that yielded them the two early wickets of Dean (3) and Joel (10). These dismissals brought together Jonathan (62*) and Andy Richards (49*). Both batsmen established their defence against the short ball, and accumulated runs while taking few risks. Jonathan’s backfoot defence was supplemented by elegant flicks and punches through the offside. Andy dominated the offside, accumulating singles and twos once the field spread. Their partnership of 124 runs secured an easy victory for the Panthers. Jonathan was awarded player of the game for his excellent all-round contribution. Hopefully, we can break out of a win-one-game lose-one-game pattern with victory at Edgar Macintosh Number 2 – the spiritual home of the Panthers - next week against the Richmond Rhinos.

MP Cavaliers T20 vs BWU Duck Duck Six @ Burnside 3 (Win by Default)
MP Beverage Brothers Presidents vs Ohoka @ Edgar Mac 2 (Loss)
Match Report supplied by Ohoka ...
Ohoka took to the road today to take on the Merivale Pap Beverage Brothers at Edgar Mac No2.
Pitch was good and as has become standard I decided to lose the toss (0 from 5 so far) and Fish decided they would have a bat. Merivale started solidly without too many shots in anger and lost their first wicket in the 10th over with the score at 30. Zane Adams joined Mario Williams at the crease and by drinks they had reached 90/1. A few mouthfuls of water and back into it. Don Mclorinan picked up the wicket of Williams for 38 followed quickly by another and we were starting to feel we could contain. The wicket of Adams for a well compiled 45 a few overs later and we were back in the game. Soon 1 for 90 had turned to 5 for 122 before a couple of solid knocks from Craig Dyer 33 and Kimberley Minogue 20 (including a walk down the wicket cover drive which was the shot of the day) got MP thru to 177/7 from their 40 overs. Bowling for Ohoka McLorinan 3/33 and Jonny Heskins 2/26 were the pick of the bowlers.
Feeling a bit familiar because we had chased this target the two previous weeks we set about it confidently. About 50 was added for the first wicket in good time (someone forget to put fall of wickets in our scorebook so I'm winging it from here) A few wickets fell at regular intervals while Nick Burnett was bringing up 50 and I joined him at the crease with us about 80 for 4 in the 14th over and at drinks we had reached 127. Fish brought Nathan Columbus back into the attack to try and pick up the breakthrough with his pace. Fish picked up Nick for a well compiled and better than run a ball 78 and Columbus picked up Prebble for an equally breezy 39 with the score at 160. A couple more wickets before Ohoka managed to get over the line 8 down with 7 overs to spare. Dyer 4/35 from 8 and Van Tongeran 1/24 from 7 the pick of the bowlers.
Another good game of cricket played competitively with some welcome beers on the boundary afterwards.

MP Presidents Gold vs Sydenham Hospital @ Hagley (Loss)
Sydenham Hospital 198/6 (40) beat MP Gold 162 (38.5) at Hagley 3
In idyllic conditions home skipper Day tossed and visiting skipper Mayo called. Wrongly. Again. Audible groans rang out from one group of cricketers whilst another looked forward to batting first on another Hagley belter. Hospital openers Day and the left handed Crowe prospered under the hot sun. Bowling for Gold, the rangy and pacy Brunie got a little shape in the light Norwest conditions, whilst PD served up 2 varieties of arm balls- slow and slower. The first wicket fell in the 10th with Crowe out caught by Mayo at mid-on for a handy 19, Hospital 40/1 off 10. Bunz and Day set about lifting the innings tempo. SVG and Millar replaced Brunie and PD from the southern & northern ends. Gold bowled tidily through to drinks, but Hospital would have been happy at 69/1 after 20. After drinks, Day was out for a useful 24, 2/76 off 23 overs. Pieter B. joined Bunz at the crease. Shortly after the first of four unscheduled rescue chopper breaks gave players another chance for a quick sip. By this stage the light norwester had turned into a gusty noreaster. Bunz batted steadily, happy to accumulate and dig in. Pieter adopted a typically aggressive approach and muscled several boundaries over the leg field as well as playing a cracking lofted straight drive. Part time bowlers Peters, Price and Corbin were introduced and put under pressure. When Pieter was out for a quick 35 Hospital were 153/3 in the 32nd over and threatened to post a very large score. The reintroduction of Brunie and SVG stemmed the flow of runs and after Bunz was dismissed for a well compiled 75 Hospital were 186/5. Hospital batted out the 40 overs for a score of 198/6. From a Gold perspective 28 extras conceded is a worry and we again struggled to contain a batting team after drinks. On the plus side there was some very tidy ground fielding, mostly sharp catching, plenty of supportive chat going on and part timers Price and Corbin bowled tidily under pressure. Millar 2/50 (8), Brunie 1/27 (8), Dearsley 1/35 (8) and SVG 0/24 (8) all bowled steadily in batter friendly conditions.
Gold started their innings with a stiff noreaster blowing. Both Hospital opening bowlers got noticeable late swing and hit good lengths from the outset. Millar was first man out, yorked by a good 'un from Pieter B for 7. Dearsley followed shortly after, bowled by a jaffa from Rahul M. Gold 9/2. An injured Hume (21) batted well until being caught behind off Rahul M. 40/3. SVG (24) looked unlucky to be given lbw to Mendis 58/4. Josh Price and GP set about reviving the innings and played some attacking shots to get us up to 129/5 when Josh was out for 36. By this stage GP was batting with a runner after straining a leg muscle and his score of 31 was a gritty knock. We ended up 36 runs short after newcomer Charlie C (14 n.o.) played a promising cameo tonk at #11. Hospital bowled with discipline and Mendis cleaned up the tail to bag a 4fer. Hats off to Hospital who thoroughly deserved their victory and outplayed us in both disciplines. They are a great bunch of guys to play and good on them. Ultimately, Brian Bunz’s innings was the difference between the teams. Positives for Gold were that the middle order scored runs and showed some good starch. The reality is that it’s very hard to win matches in this grade without at least one of the first 5 batters scoring big. That’s what we will need to do next week on a belter at Mandeville.
