Match Reports from Saturday 7th December ...

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs Old Boys Collegians @ Elmwood 4 (2-Day)(Day-1)

After a loss in the first round of the 2 day comp under the belt for the Championship side and coming up against OBC who also had a loss in round 1, this was a big game for both teams to have a hope of a successful 2-day campaign. We arrived at Elmwood Park to what looked to be a nice day as well as a nice pitch, plenty of grass but very flat looking, Henry promptly lost the toss and we were put in to bat, Henry would have done this anyway, as per the mantra of W. G. Grace "When you win the toss – bat. If you are in doubt, think about it, then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague – then bat." OBC bowled nicely restricting runs and taking wickets at regular intervals to help them restrict us from forming any major partnerships. Overseas visitor Matthew Morgan the top scorer for the second consecutive week with a well made 29, and 27 from Jamal. With rumours floating around the club that Ryan Edmonds was on for his maiden club hundred with a little over four overs to go, Beattie decided that it was time to take to the long handle, out trying to hit to the longest boundary into the wind for a lusty 19. Unfortunately, no ton for Ryan with plenty of balls left (25) to make his was from 21* to 100*, not to be this time. MPCC 168 all out from 55.5 overs.

In to bowl the openers struggled, on a hot day with a strong wind, Beattie and Morgy struggled to hit a consistent line and length, Beattie was particularly poor and was quickly removed from the attack. On came Henry and Jacob for what felt like 30 overs each in really tough conditions, both bowled very, very well and got their rewards after the drinks break after tea, Henry with 3/49 and Jacob chipping in with a couple for himself. OBC 158/6 off 44 overs, being only ten runs behind with 4 wickets in hand we will need to start much quicker than we did on Saturday, a few quick wickets next Saturday and it’s all to play for, if we let OBC bat out their overs though we could be in for a long day.

Best of luck to the seconds in their Semi-Final on Sunday 15th at Edgar Mac, it would be great to see the club get down and show your support!

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs East Chch Shirley @ Edgar Mac 1 (1-Day)(Win)

Last time we played Easts, some numpty decided to launch over the top on a tie and failed, so we’d missed one winning chance. Round 10 of the 1-day comp gave Div 1 a chance to put that right on Edgar Mac no. 1 and gave us a sniff of getting to the final direct or, failing that, to at least get a home semi-final. Ryan won the toss and we had a bat, but things didn’t go according to plan in the early stages as much of the top order showed the same kind of resistance that Comet does to invitations to tell a terrible joke. Abhi batted well up top, but we lost James for 0, Ryan for 2, Jamie for 4 and Comet for 5 as we stumbled to 67 before Abhi was out for 38 just before a second rain delay. When Sam was out for 4 in the 22nd over, we were 73-6 on a road. This brought together Kyle ‘responsibility is my middle name’ Slon, and Srinath ‘fear the beard’ Basaboena, and over the next twenty overs, they set about resurrecting our innings with a 90-run 7th wicket partnership, aided in part by some pretty generous provision of extras by Easts, who leaked 43 wides and 3 no-balls. Slon and Basa batted very well, seeing off decent balls, leaving things away from the wicket and picking off the poor ones, showing the rest of the order the virtue of patience and shot selection, before Basa was eventually out for a gritty 22 off 59, leaving us 162-7. Chris ‘Hipster’ McBride joined Solane and they added another 16 to the score before Hipster was distracted by the thought of limited edition cat-poo coffee (look it up) and blooped up an attempted hook. Salnoe brought up his 50 in the 47th over, but holed out soon after, trying to up the pace, ending up 51 off 91 in an innings characterised more by self-abnegation than bicep-flexing. Well batted. This left Jacob ‘golden child’ Koster and Dave ‘numpty’ Monger to add as many as possible, and 22 more runs followed before JK was caught for 12 in the last over, leaving numpty 4* and MP on 205.

Into the bowling and Hipster and Sonela got us off to a great start, with Selona cleaning up Easts’ leading run-scorer with a peach and Hipster nicking off the skipper via a sharp slip catch by Jamie. Slaone beat the bat a number of times without further luck, getting 1-15 off 6 before resting, while Hipster’s spell was as on-point as a pair of corduroy braces, picking up 1-11 off his 6. They were replaced by Sam ‘wickets are for glory-hunters’ Gillespie, whose dots were so boring that even some of the fielders were asleep at crucial moments, as he ended up 0-22 off 10. At the other end, the decision to trust the bus proved a good one, as Basa, despite possessing the smallest hands in Christchurch, clung on to a C+B in his first over, then induced a chop-on in his second, picking up 2-12 off 4. JK also picked up a wicket in his first over via a good catch from James, eventually taking 1-23 off 7. At one stage Easts were 50-5, before a middle-order partnership of their own. Abhi ‘I’m a glory-hunter so I took wickets’ Paudel replaced Sam, while Dave replaced JK, also getting a wicket in his first over which can only be described as the current ball of the century, a slow, dropping half-tracker that dislodged the bail on the way through, thus inducing quite the tanty from the batsman eventually given out by his skipper, who decided to victimise an innocent plastic chair on the way off. Next over Abhi drew a catch from the other set batsman for his first wicket, and after another brief partnership in the tail, the destroyer decided to wrap things up, taking 3 more wickets with catches in the deep by Chapman and Ryno and a great charging effort from James. Abhi ended up 4-23 off 5.5 overs, Easts ended up 136 all out off 43, and the 2nds retired to the changing sheds to sing a song, despite the skip making us buy our own at the bar. Provided half the team can haul up their bottom lips from where they dropped on this news, we’ll meet Easts again in a home semi-final next Sunday (after also playing them at home in a T20 on Saturday), and it would be great to have a few fans on the sidelines.

POD was given to Selano for his 50 and great start with the ball, but outstanding efforts from ‘trust the bus’ and Abhi, as well as a good all-round energetic effort in the field made this a fun win for the whole team. Fingers crossed, now that we've finally gone Edgar Mac, we'll never go back.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.5 vs Marist-Harewood @ Edgar Mac 2 (Loss)

Requested to bowl first in conditions with the mild heat and dampness of a Jackie Collins novel, opening exchanges saw shots fired by both Matt W and the other team’s left-handed opener who played quite delightfully before being picked up by Mani (again bowling cleverly). Choppa soon came into the attack and pretty quickly let his mouth do the talking. The ball started talking in reasonably short order too, as the other opening batsman had his poles struck, but it was not long before the bowler drew the ire of the skipper who went from the very measured Gill whom I am getting to know into The Incredible Gilmeister quicker than you could mutter that the comedy of Hospital Radio is eternally insensitive to the sick and dying - Gilly administering The Axe in single word rebuke to the quickly acquiescent cover fielder. Meanwhile, Nana’s maintenance of the team’s weekly fostered red head had begun promisingly enough but soon began to wilt as he moved out to boundary line environs and so care of the little round fellow dropped lower than current day Oranga Tamariki standard’s and Milky was left to step in and take on the role of dodgy uncle in his place. And this was just the first ten overs! Through the remainder of the opponent’s innings it was a tale of opposition members’ Israel Folau-like cries of innocence in reply to a variety of not-all-polite enquires from a few in our pack - the most obvious question of which was Gilly’s “why are you still here after clubbing the pill on the full into my gloves?” followed by some shared reflections on the batsman’s recently departed mother and her likely perspective on some relevant ethical considerations. There were also one  or two (or three or four or more) dropped catches along the way and these must ultimately be called out for more of the blame regarding the size of the chase. Gin and Tonic Sharma both bowled with some guile, Matt and Bellsy largely without luck and Dan had a much better second spell (which was no doubt the highlight of a day in the salt mines for him).

That was that then. Needing 196,  and in the manner of  Shane Jones steadily revoking a pile of partnership visas, three okay starts by batsmen who should have done better were shaffled by sound catching behind the wicket and drinks saw around 80 runs on the board with the skipper looking likely as man alone. The second half of the innings then had the success of the government’s gun buy-back scheme and, despite another good knock by our leader and the highlight of a first ball six into the second tier of trees at the far end of the ground by Mani, we finished maybe 25 short with an over and a half to go. A bit of a shellacking to be fair with some decent quick bowling by a couple of their guys and five wickets in 16 overs lost to their pair of spinners.  Big deal. It is just a game (although I still hate the other team).

MP Like-Minded Div.7 vs Riccarton @ Bishopdale 1 (Win)

Due to certain players putting crate day before the cricket, there was a struggle during the week as usual to fill the team lucky for us Kyle Sloane brought his mate along to training and with Andy’s hype work mate keen to fill in we scraped 11. With a light shower at 12 we decided with the pitch a little damp to have a bowl first. Opened up with Andy (3-14) and Sam (0-23), both bowled tight as usual with Andy getting a couple of early breakthroughs the Everest Warriors fought back well to be about 50-3 at drinks with Flats getting a caught and bowled just before the break. Following drinks Flats (2-41) got a wicket first ball caught well in the slips by Dakesy (3-23) who then decided he was the alpha bowler in the team proceeding to get a triple wicket maiden including a well taken high catch at long off by Alex. Some rather unorthodox street cricket style batting by the lower order was costly to Flats making his last few overs quite expensive. Andy was brought back on with an edge going through the vacant 2nd slip spot first ball followed by a catch taken at 2nd slip the very next ball. Fill in Sonny (0-15) who claimed to be an off spinner decided because of wind he would try some seam bowling only for him to find himself disappearing. Jono was given a short spell and after 3 full tosses and 3 wides decided to bowl on the pitch and picked up a cheeky 2-11 off 1.3. Everest Warriors finished 131 all out which was far below par on the road that John had prepared for us.

Coming into bat Timba and Sonny opened up and basically spanked them all over the park. Timba having not played much during the season turned the clock back to play a very aggressive knock including 2 slog sweeps for 6. While at the other end Sonny was playing a block bash innings obviously not really that interested in running too much. Sonny was first out bowled for 55 followed 2 overs later by Timba for 54 with a very good 110 partnership between them both. As usual on a road someone has to be the bloke that gets out for nothing apparently this was my week as I was bowled for a 4th ball duck. Tom (12*) and Alex (5*) saw us home to get a well deserved 7 wicket win. Thanks to Sloane’s mate Aaron and newbie Sam McDonnell for helping us out.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.8 vs Heathcote Tussocks @ Centennial 3 (Win)

Saturday afternoon saw the LBJ Div 8 team, positioned near the bottom of the table. up against the Heathcote "Tussocks", in the top half of the group, at Centennial Park. We were joined by Caleb Cottom, who played for us a couple of times last season, newcomer Patrick Morris and, returning from an Indian jaunt, Jatinder Singh. We actually won the toss for a change, and due to a couple of our players having to leave early, took the opportunity to bowl first on a pitch that looked good, but since it was Centennial Park, who knew how it would play. The first few overs seemed to prove things hadn't changed - the bounce was erratic, at best, at both ends, and it was very two paced. Our opening bowlers, Jatinder and Max, had the batsmen under early pressure, and we reduced Heathcote to 3 down with less than 10 runs on the board, with our keeper, Caleb, taking two catches off JT & Max, and Max trapping another in front. A great start! Unfortunately for us, their numbers 4 & 5 were clearly made of sterner stuff, and both our bowling and fielding lost some of its intensity. With the pitch also becoming easier to bat on under the sun, the two batsmen put on a 100+ partnership, until around the 30th over. We didn't bowl great lengths, although our line continued to be very good, only conceding 3 wides. We were also off our usual high standards in the field, with a couple of missed opportunities and a number of runs unnecessarily conceded. It wasn't until the re-introduction of Sam and JT in the 32nd over that we took back control. Up until that point Heathcote had scored around 130 runs - in the last 8 overs we only conceded less than 20, and took 6 wickets. One of the "in" batsmen was removed by Sam in his first over, and from that point they lost regular wickets, with the other set batsman bowled by JT. Only one of the four other batsmen dismissed got off the mark. Heathcote hung on to be 9 down at the end, having posted a more than respectable 153. It could have been far worse, however, without Sam and JT's efforts. JT ended on 4/27 off his 8, and Sam 3/15 from 8, with Max 2/14 from his 8. Malcolm was 0/29 from 6, Patrick 0/40 from 8, and Aaron 0/17 from 2.

So a target of 154 on, while not being by any means lethal, a tricky pitch to bat on. Dean opened as usual, but was joined by Joel, who needed to leave early. Joel took his opportunity, for a short while at least, before being bowled for 16. It included, however, a massive 6 that cleared the trees, reaching the road on the full and hitting a neighbour's fence across the road on the first bounce. Up there, apparently, with his efforts a couple of seasons back where he cleared the clubhouse at Edgar Mac. Dean hung around for a steady 18, and Patrick (6) and Max (2) made brief appearances. At drinks, with myself and Caleb at the crease, we were around 50 for 4, needing a further 100+ runs for victory. After drinks, Caleb and I combined for a reasonable partnership, before I was out for 23. Which brought JT out to the crease. Caleb and I had kept the run rate up reasonably well, but it would still take quite a batting performance to get us home. And....quite a batting performance it was. JT and Caleb really took it to the Heathcote bowlers with a superb batting display, a combination of big hitting and excellent running between the wickets. They did it so well, in fact, that they reached the target with over 2 overs to spare, leaving both JT (32) and Caleb (39) not out. Heathcote didn't help their cause, though, letting through a number of boundary byes. With the final score being 155/5, in 37.4 overs, it was a significant victory by 5 wickets. Significant because it was against a team a number of places ahead of us in the table, and also because it showed we can fight back from a seemingly dire position. Plus, for the second week in a row our batsmen stood up and put runs on the board, which is something that had been missing, as a whole, from earlier in the season. So we continue to rise up the table - here's hoping we can continue our good run when we come up against 2nd place Riccarton this week.

MP Robbies Riccarton Blue Presidents vs ECS Black @ Burnside 2 (Win)

It was Presidents day at Burnside Park on Saturday where we took on the impressive East Shirley black team on the no2 wicket. It is getting a bit repetitive but once again I failed with the toss and we were put into the field on what looked to be a belter of a wicket. With Rowe out injured we opened with Columbus and Van Tongeren. Both did a steller job and after the first 10 overs we had knocked the top off their order having them 3-31 with Tonka picking up 2 and Nath 1. Easts started putting little partnerships together and we had to wait until 60 to grab the next wicket. Amy picking that one up. It was 81/4 at drinks and we were reasonably happy as the wicket and outfield were very good. We snared their 5th wicket at 104 with Grunta catching a difficult skier off Townrow. From there the score went through to 189 before I managed to entice their top scorer Harkness (93) into a lofted drive which was happily taken by Rooney on the long on boundary. From there we picked up another couple of cheap wickets to leave them with 195/8 after their 40. Wicket takers were Columbus 8-21-1, Van Tongeren 8-39-3, Dyer 7-38-2, Rendel 4-20-1 and Townrow 5-31-1. Other bowlers used were  Berry 4-19-0 and Mayo 4-17-0. Six good catches and a stumping helping us on the way in what was a very good fielding effort.

Out to bat we went thinking that if we bat the overs the runs will take care of themselves. Opened with Rooney (1) and Moore (8). Both were back on the sideline with the score at 10. Mayo joined Cini and hit his first ball for a massive six. Two balls later he repeated it. Cini (1) was then trapped in front and we were 22/3 and wobbling just a wee bit. Stackhouse joined Mayo and they both went about rebuilding the innings. We got through to 71 before Stackhouse (15) missed one and was bowled. I came and went for 8, hitting a rank long hop straight down deep square legs throat. The only fielder within 60 metres. We got through to drinks at 97/5 with Rendel and Mayo in. 100 runs to get in 20 overs and we still gave ourselves a chance. Andy and Amy got us through to 140 before Mayo who batted brilliantly tried to add another six to his tally only to be very well caught on the boundary for 77.  It included 9x4s and 4x6s. Rendel (23) was bowled trying to up the tempo and Berry (2) was soon caught behind. 152/8 and we needed 44 off 5 overs. Townrow and Van Tongeren not only denied them the wicket they were looking for but batted outstandingly getting us through to 186 before Townrow (17) was run out with a ball to go in the 39th over. Tonka then hit the last ball for 6 leaving us 4 to get off the last over. A very nervous no11 Columbus missed the first ball but managed to scramble a run next ball after very nearly getting caught. Tonka (27no) who also batted brillantly hit the next ball through wide mid off for a boundary. A win for us 9 down with 3 balls left!

So a fantastic game was had. A song, some drinks and a bit of a natter with the Easts lads was also very enjoyable. Mayo was given Player of the Day for his impressive batting which kept us in the hunt. It could just have easily gone to Tonka whose 3 wickets, 2 catches and 27no was also an outstanding effort. He thinks that he now has 150 wickets and 1000 runs for the club. Well deserved and very well done mate. We will have to wait for the club statistician to confirm this. You wouldn't want to be premature like Towny was would you?

MP Robbies Riccarton Gold Presidents vs Sydenham Cardinals @ Burnside 5 (Loss)

True to form, MPCC Robbies Gold had the technical hosting rights at the artificial pitch known as Burnside 5. Seems to be a given when my boys play Cardinals it takes place on a rubber duckie, memory serves this is the fourth in a row, we can't remember what grass tracks play like under the bowling line ups. Phil called correctly and asked to have a bat first, which was a right kick in the teeth with blustery conditions making it an easy decision to make. Cards opened up with Wild, fresh off a big score last week and Matthews looking for some form. I went with the trusted combination of Crimp and Dearsley to combat. Matthews traditional walk down the pitch tactics keep him out of trouble as my guys tried to keep an off stump line, a cut and jab battle occurred. Wild being the one to blink caught well by Rob at mid-wicket for 10 off Dearsley in his fifth over. I gave Crimpy another then changed it up introducing myself when Walker got to the crease, letting Dearsley finish his overs off which he did economically. Good thing too as I was getting plastered, no further wicket before drinks but a couple of chances generated by Wade in his first two. 90/1 at the twenty and the game was in the balance (nah, they looked comfortable enough)... Persisting with the change bowlers we had an initial tight period, then Walker and Matthews gained the momentum again, Paul bringing up his 50 third over after drinks, then promptly falling to Wade's shorter (and marginally quicker) ball the next over. Phil took exception to my next over finding the boundary three time as I bowled "poo's", but effectively buying his wicket on Wades behalf as he got him next over trying to work a shot over Pricey, unsuccessfully, retiring for 47. I got a bonus double tap in my last, probably (no definitely) undeserved, with Hardy (7) and Hannan (0). Mario settled into the crease and looked untroubled as I threw Campbell, Millar and Hume at the pair that included Winder. The partnership put on 31 before the crazy frog Hume, bowling goodness know what, struck coaxing an edge from Winder (caught well by Mayo) for 13. This set up a progression of wickets and Campbell chipped out three over the course of a couple of overs turning 157/5 into 183/9. I brought back Crimpy to finish with the wind and aside from a last over, first ball late cut from Fleming (for 4), managed to tidy up the tail, Campbell taking his third catch for the innings to go with his three wickets. Restricting Cardinals to 188, I felt we dodged a bullet as it threatened to blow out big time.

Paul and Rob, not content with their bowling efforts opened the batting for us, and put the onus back on the Cards from the get go, helped by some wayward bowling from Sydenham openers advanced our cause to 24 by the middle of the third over. Tim got one on target and had Paulie knicking off to Mario for 9. Hume and Rob kept up the momentum, forcing Phil to change his attack probably quicker than he anticipated. Winder and Julian picking up the reins. New bowler, new tactics, Winder bringing a consistent short ball attack, Julian a more orthodox approach. Rob showing no respect pumped Ken over mid-wicket for six second ball before Julian got his revenge, picking up Rob a couple of overs later hitting to Van Dyke for 29, score on 60 after 9.1. Double tragedy as we lost Hume in Winders next over not getting onto another short ball gloving through to Mario for a patient (for Hume standards) 10. Wade and I put on 30 in five when the introduction of Fleming put pay to our partnership, Wade (11) mistimed (not badly enough unfortunately) drive to Walker taken just above the grasstop. Mayo joined me (with Wade back out in a runner capacity) and we carried on to drinks at 111/4. That horrible number in conjunction with the break suitable to disturb the concentration, enough to think I could plant Flem's half volley outside off back down the ground third ball back into a howling norwesterer only to find the fine hands of Walker snatching away the dream... 32. Having still faith Crimp found himself in the middle, but the clamps had started to go on, Flem using the bounce in the pitch and his height to his advantage to keep it tight, and Ken coming back with the boofers gone, doing the same. They strangled the middle order and removed Crimp (3) cheaply in the process. Problem for us is we lost Mayo just before this for a fine (but painful) 18. Reduced to 126/7, which could have been so much worse when Badger skied his first ball, to be dropped by Mario (who was having such a good game to that point). Making the most of that luck Price and Greg plowed some good looking shots, Badger dominating their stint taking 21 of the 27 runs scored. Undone by a returned Wazz, snicking behind, 153/8. Skuds played sensibly advancing the score to 166 with Pricey, then bowled for 6 when Winder got him playing on. Final pair at the wicket 22 to tie off 4 and a bit overs, could there be a fairytale ending? Turns out not, some enterprising shot making (including Josh's version of the "Dilscoop"), brought to an end by spoilsport's Guy and Mario combination again, seventeen short of the target, Price 16 and Muzz 2*.

Another awesome example of a President's Day done well, thanks Crash and Burnside for providing the festivities and facilities, they are always appreciated...
