Sporting Edge MPCC News 09/02/19

Congratulations to Matt Ling #262 who scored 111 for the MP Sporting Edge Championship XI helping the side to a 1st innings score of 317 for 3 against East Chch Shirley at Edgar Mac 1 on Sunday. This was Matt's maiden century for the club and also took him past 500 runs for the season to date. His opening partnership of 164 with Ed Waind (95) was just 4 runs short of the record 1st wicket partnership for MPCC "Senior A" of 168 set by Jim Knowles & Ross Groves against Upper Riccarton on 16th Feb 1991. The team total of 317/3 set a new MPCC "Senior A" record surpassing the 314/8 against Heathcote in Season 2012/13. Congratulations also to Ed Waind #265 who scored 95. This was Ed's maiden "Senior A" fifty, surpassing his previous best of 23 not-out.

Congratulations to Tribhuvan Sharma whose 5 for 20 off his 4 overs in last Wednesday's Div.1 T20 Final helped the side to victory against Burnside-West and saw him claim his very first 5 wicket bag for MPCC. Having debuted for the club in the 2014/15 season it's fair to say Sharma was a very happy man when the umpire's finger was raised for the 5th time!

Congratulations to Zac Medland who made his "Senior A" debut on Saturday 9th February and showcased his talent scoring 81 off 102 balls (10 x 4's) from No.8 in the order for the MP Sporting Edge Championship XI who found themselves following-on on Day 2 of their match against Burnside-West at Burnside Park. Zac becomes player #267 to have played "Senior A" for MPCC and is another graduate of  North-West Youth Cricket.

Congratulations to MPCC Club President David Monger whose wicket for MP Sporting Edge Div.1 against OBC at Elmwood Park on Sunday in a spell of 1 for 17 off 6.3 overs before suffering a recurrence of a recent bicep injury was his 300th for the club.

Congratulations to Jacob Wilson whose 5 for 43 off 14 overs on Sunday for MP Sporting Edge Div.1 against OBC at Elmwood Park was his maiden 5 wicket bag for MPCC.

Match Report from Wednesday 6th February ...

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs Burnside-West @ Hagley 2 (T20 Final)(Win)

10 from 10 coming into the final the T20 was ours to lose. As per tradition we had a team breakfast, this time cooked by famous chef Akshay Reddy. Few of the boys found it a little spicy for first thing but it was delicious none the less.

After winning the toss on the flattest track in the city we decided to have a bat. We opened up with Skip Ash and Srirag who both started positively using the aerial route successfully. 39 for 1 at the end of the powerplay with Ash caught for 18. 81-1 after 10 and we were in the best position we had been in all season with Comet (26) and Srirag seeing it like a beachball. Soon after Srirag was caught for 39 off just 25 balls. Unfortunately, from there things slowed down a bit as fresh batters tried to keep the momentum going. A string of single figured scores followed the great start by our top 3 and we ended up with 142 off the 20.

Out to bowl and we knew they relied heavily on their opener who had 400 runs from his 8 games in the competition. Both openers took a liking to Sloane early on hitting him for a few boundaries, while Beattie started with 3 wides in his first 4 balls. Following a loose first over Beattie corrected himself to bowl possibly his best spell of the season finishing 1-16 off 4. Srirag bowled a tight spell replacing Sloane and picking up the key wicket of Finlayson lbw. He bowled 4 overs, 2-21. With the match in the balance Ash turned to his star bowler, a man who always steps up when the pressure is on, Tribhuvan Sharma. Sharma bowled a magical spell beating the batters with flight, dip and turn to leave them with no choice but to attempt the slog over cow. Sharma picked up 5 wickets in his 4 overs for just 20 runs and single handily turned the game back in our favour. In a game which could have easily gone either way we were very lucky to have Sharma.

Few beers bit of a yarn was to follow. The team moved on celebrations to Rochie’s where the Champagne and pizzas (Thanks Kendal) came out to finish off the competition on a high. Thanks to everybody who came down to support us, it means a lot.

Match Reports from Saturday 9th February ...

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs BWUCC @ Burnside 1 (2-Day)(Loss)

Another Saturday another game of cricket. After a difficult first day we weren’t exactly in the best of situations to win the game but avoiding the follow on would go a long way to achieve that. However, requiring 26 runs with one wicket in hand wasn’t exactly the best situation we’d given Josh and Nath and although Josh threatened to chase it down with a couple of nice lofted drives and a glorious cover drive he was bowled out and we were left trailing by 117 runs. Without any hesitation from the opposition we were asked to follow on and with R.Hawkins, B.Mayo, and J.Chapman all out for various reasons we welcomed a mixture of rigs and twigs to the XI this weekend with J.Duncan, debutant Zac Medland as well as M.Ling all in. E.Waind and M.Ling opened up for us and after M.Ling was caught behind and Rory followed soon after we needed to just occupy the crease for a little bit. H.Winchester and E.Waind battled hard for 20 overs and although runs were hard to come by they did subject the opposition to the heat for a while. With a double strike though the pair were back in the pavilion this brought out J.Sukhon and S.Harish who being the players they are, were always going to look for runs and find a way back into the game for us. Things looked good for a while with a couple of boundaries off the bat of S.Harish. However, it was once again a double strike that saw them both sent back bringing out newcomer Z.Medland and club character J.Duncan to the crease with the score at 90-6 and still trailing by 20. The pair continued their good form from the lower grades though and put on 50 runs in the next 10 overs with relative ease and it wasn’t until a sharp catch from their keeper that the partnership ended with J.Duncan back for a quickfire 20. With a 30 run lead S.Gillespie joined Z.Medland and played second fiddle to what was an outstanding innings from Zac, an innings which showed maturity and patience beyond his years, manipulating the field, knowing his strengths and running hard. This running proved to be the undoing of partner S.Gillespie though who should have come back for 2 only to be out bowled next ball trying to up the run rate for a handy 22. Z.Medland continued to bat through with J.Dyer and N.Columbus and it didn’t look like anything could stop him. That was before he suffered a serious case of cramp which may or may not have contributed to his stumping for the last wicket out for 81 and lead the the team to a total of 227 a lead of 110 with about 30 overs to play in the day.

So with 110 to defend we thought we were in with a pretty good shout and after N.Columbus got a wicket in the first over we definitely thought we were in this. What we didn’t take into account though was the strength of their batting line-up and as well as how good the pitch was and after they dispatched all the bad balls which raced along the outfield they ended up getting there in 18 overs only 3 down. The other two wickets courtesy of J.Sukhon and E.Waind. A disappointing loss primarily caused by a bad first day but good to see the boys show some fight with the bat in that second innings and there’s at least something to take from from it.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs Lancaster Park @ Edgar Mac 1 (2-Day)(Loss)

Coming into the second day of the 2 day match, we were behind by about 30 runs with the loss of just 1 wicket and Sharma on the lunch box. Things started well with Bubbles bowling all sorts of rubbish as Ash put him away for 13. Although as with every spray can bowler one is on the money and Collins was walking back in his next over for a duck. Eder and Ash went through a very tight period with Baker and Bubbles offering not much to put away. Just as Ash was starting to look good in came the Samoan powerhouse who quickly put the fear into Ash (36) and had him throwing away a good start. Nabin and Eder put on a good partnership with Eder (22) looking like he has finally hit some form until he fell playing his late cut to second slip. The introduction of the spin master Pimm quickly turned things in Parks favour with him turning a ball for the first time in 10 years to remove Nabin for 9. Rochford came in and hit a couple of 4s before trying a Gill approach and missed a slog across the line to the golden arm of Tanswell. Bellsy in at 8 looked about as good as Darren Leigh pumping Div 8 bowlers as he timed the ball to perfection through the covers. His series of odd dismissals continued, as he managed to chop one on for 13. Gill who had been very restrained and having hidden his slog all day decided instead to take a suicidal single to be run out for 28. With the team in trouble at 133-8 it was a surprise not to see Park put the foot on the throat and bring on Hicks, which allowed Jacob and Sloane to stage a mini recovery, Jacob hitting 22 including some very nice shots through the covers. But with Monger starting to hit some bombs towards the end Wilson decided to be bowled by Pimm to once again cut a magical Monger (6) innings short. We finished on 179/10 with a lead of 145.

Coming out to bowl and we were confident that we had a sniff. Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan as while Bubbles was at one end getting hit more than hitting the ball, Heath was carving out a good innings. Sloane struggled a bit early although this was probably due to being completely out muscled by Toalii’s friend who was filling in who was nicknamed the Samoan Bulldozer. At tea LPW had made their way to 46/0 with Bubbles still not off the mark. Needing a bit of magic after tea Ash decided to let Collins have a trundle and the impact was seen immediately after starting with a few looseners a half volley down leg teased Bubbles into actually playing an attacking shot resulting in a catch at short fine leg, this was quickly followed up with a seed that would have impressed Philander to remove Taylor. Of course, being the captain of the MPCC Rig XI does come at a cost with 5 overs being the limit to finish 2-12. Ash decided to give Monger a chance to get his 300th club wicket who obviously thought back of a length was the way to go finishing 0-29 off 4. Bellam struggled a bit with the introduction of the Powerhouse finishing 0-27 off 5. Wilson returned and got the wicket of Toalii but it was too late after Sharma (0-17 off 2) was once again asked to bowl to Hick which tends to end up going the same way each time (Long off having to go for a jog about 500m down the road to collect the ball). A rather amusing moment did occur after the first six Sharma tossed up the next ball saying “Another one” mid flight which ended up in the same area as the first one. LPW chased our total down 4 down and were simply the better team.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.5 vs Riccarton Cannons @ Yaldhurst Dom.1 (Loss)

The boys rocked up to Yaldhurst Domain, a ground that no one in the team had played at before. A good pitch, fast outfield, and small boundaries, lined mostly with dense shrub. With temperatures peaking over 30, both teams were looking to bat first, but life isn't fair. Milky and Beattie took the new pill, and for the first 7 overs, the situation was looking good, already one back in the shed and only 7 to the team total. The next 23 overs, can only be described as a blitzkrieg. The opener, still in, started to find the middle, then the boundary, then the densest parts of the shrubbery (I had watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail earlier in the week, the scene with The Knights Who Say Ni played every time in my head while searching deep in the shrubs). Those 23 overs cost us 197 runs, a new ball, a ball that wasn't ours that we found during one of our many search and rescue missions, which we would proceed to lose as well. All the damage was done by their opener Manjot, who with his $1100 GN Signature bat, plundered 152. Riccarton, with ten to go, were primed to push towards 280-300, however, we pulled it back, taking 7 for 63 to finish the 40 overs at 266/9. Mani, after going for 6 4's in his second over, came back to take 5-54 off his 7. Bushby unlucky not to get a wicket in his 8 overs for 24, Beattie bowled his 8, 1-28.

A big total to chase, but not impossible, Milky and Nick started the charge. They put on a quick 29 before Nick played around a straight one for 10. Scotty was unable to perform any of the heroics from last week, cover driving one a bit to close, bowled for 1. Patto straight away, made short work of picking up the run rate, Milky however succumbed to the pressure, playing around a full ball for 26 (and he only charged at one delivery today). Paul, back from his honeymoon, lasted as long as his wedding night. Bish and Patto took us through to drinks at 100/4. The situation required 8's an over for the last 20, you would forgive the team if they went bravely, quietly into the night (we didn't finish until 7.45pm). But this was not the MPCC way, at least not today. Patto (37), Bish (45), Basa (35), Beattie (39 off 20), Mani (20*), and Brayden (6*) took the fight right to them, every second or third over was a big one. With ten to go, we needed 90, even with 7-8 fielders on the boundary, the runs kept flowing. It became 37 off 5, and the improbable was becoming possible. A couple of key wickets stifled things at the end, and 15 off the final over proved too much. A win for Riccarton by nine runs.

We'll remember this game for the lusty blows, the despair of watching the game seemingly slip away, and the heroic resurgence of the lower order to nearly pull off one of the best run chases anyone has been part of. Player of the day has to go to Mani, and the lower order for some great entertainment.

MP Rebels Div.7 vs Marist-Harewood @ Edgar Mac 2 (Loss)

We played Marist Harewood on the back pitch - Edgar Mac 2.  I lost the toss and they decided to bat. We opened up with Andy and Flats, they both bowled pretty well but for not much reward. I replaced Andy with the fill in, Lewis, and he carried on with Flats at the other end. Flats picked up one just before his 8 overs were up with Lewis bowling well at the other end. John took up the other end after Flats finished his 8 overs. John then bowled out his 8 overs on the trot picking up a wicket with a great effort ball that cannoned into off stump. Lewis meanwhile at the other end finished his 8 overs with three wickets with Roosey taking a couple of catches off his bowling.  Andrew came back with his 3 overs to go bowling brilliantly picking up another two wickets taking his tally to three for not many at all.  This left four overs needing to be bowled at either end and only two wickets needed to get out of the sun and sit in the shade for a bit.  Balfour took over Andy's end with a nice breeze behind him, bowling nice and tight. I had the ball at the other end and managed to snare a wicket on the second ball leaving one wicket to go. Balfour bowled another tight over getting the ball to swing, very back of a length.  My next over was not good with 3 wides with one going to the boundary for four and going for 18 runs off the over having 1/22(2) hoping not to bowl another over. Balfour took the next wicket with the second ball, edging to slip, I took the catch and was relieved that I didn't have to bowl another over. Marist Harewood 183/10 in the 36th over. All the bowlers picking up a wicket. Stand out bowlers were Andy 3/30 (8) and Lewis 3/33 (8).

In the batting we lost wickets far too regularly and Marist bowled really well. Andy was the standout batter with 23 and Chris Hortin bludgeoned a few fours for his 13. We were all out for 87 in the 25th over. Full credit to Marist, they bowled extremely well. Nice to hear the opposition complimenting the ground and the grounds keeper for a great pitch.  Thanks to the grounds staff for all their efforts in supplying us with nice grounds to play on. A great deal of time and heart goes into the grounds and we are very appreciative of their efforts.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.8 vs LP Orcas @ Bishopdale 1 (Win)

It was a rather warm day when the Div 8 LBJ team met the Lancaster Park Orcas at Bishopdale Park. I lie - it was hot - damn hot. Unfortunately Malcolm was once again cold when it came to the coin toss - we lost again, and the Orcas inserted themselves on what looked like a belter of a pitch. But would it meet those lofty expectations? The answer would be a resounding "No". Not that it was the pitch's fault at all - it remained a fine piece of turf. It was a combination of fine bowling, good fielding, and average batsmanship that did it. Sam and Masood combined once again for the opening bowling partnership, and Sam turned in one of his finest opening spells of the season. He beat the bat repeatedly, but once again wasn't rewarded accordingly. He finished the day with 0/13 from his 4. It was a slightly different story at the other end - Masood was virtually unplayable as well, but got the rewards, with an opening spell of 1/2 from his first 3 overs. He came back later on to take another brace of wickets without conceding any more runs, to finish with a superb 3/2 from his 5 overs. It didn't stop there - Joel chimed in with an outstanding 4/19 from 6, and Jatinder was hot on his heels with 4/28 from his 5. The end result was we dismissed the Orcas for 64 after only 20 overs. What was also impressive is that there was only a single extra - a solitary no ball. No byes, leg byes or wides.

So our turn to bat. There was an element of trepidation - what happened to them could happen to us and when Ricky was dismissed early for not much, that element began to solidify a little. However, I kept one end ticking along, and even though Darren was also bowled for an extremely sedate 5, we reached the target in only the 13th over, with myself not out 32 and Dean 8. The Orca's fortunes weren't helped by bowling 12 wides, including two 5's. So a win by 8 wickets, and an early finish to the game, which was appreciated by all, considering the heat! A comprehensive victory, albeit against a team we beat by 200 runs the last time we met. It was a very disciplined performance however, one we should take confidence from going into our next game against the leaders of the grade.

MP Identity Signs Presidents vs Sumner @ Warren 4 (Loss)

Identity Signs Pressies played Sumner on an artificial wicket at Warren Park on Saturday. I won the toss and thought we might bat first and pile on the runs. Well the runs came fairly quickly but so did the usual fall of wickets. Davidson (16), Stocker (16), Hastings (0), Rendel (0), Rooney(13) and myself (0) were all back sitting under the shade of the trees by drinks. 90 odd for 6 after 20 and things were pretty grim. Moore was batting very well and was joined by Brown. They put on another 20 before Brown (7) was trapped in front. Van Tongeren came out and was forming a good partnership with Moore before Moore fell for a well compiled 65. Late fill in Goodin was LBW for 2 and Rowe was 1* when Van Tongeren (29) had his poles cleaned up. So we somehow scrapped our way through to 168 all out with 7 overs left unbowled. Another disappointing batting effort, but really it has been the story of our season so far.

Out to bowl we went with the captains words of -  10 great pieces of cricket guys and we will take this game. Unfortunately Sumner didn’t see it that way. We got an early breakthrough with Rendel catching their opener (0) off Van Tongerens bowling. From then on Marsh and Russell controlled things for Sumner. I used 8 bowlers in trying to remove the batsmen and although we had some close leg before shouts we were unsuccessful. Marsh (86) departed LBW Rendel with 5 runs required. Yock came in and got them which left Russell 70*. A batting lesson for us and a hiding to go with it.

So on to next week we go with renewed optimism that our batting will come right and the win will follow.

MP (Pickles) Presidents vs Sydenham Cardinals @ Warren 2 (Loss)

Presidents Day at Warren Park (and it's offshoot Westlake), another example of effort yielding result. Thanks to Kevin and his lads for hosting another memorable event in the Presidents calendar. Although I am afraid to report our own non memorable effort on Warren 2a was in no way considered worth a write up, I will do so in praise of our opposition, the Sydenham Cardinals... Bright and hot was the day so I was quite delighted to win a toss and ask Phil's boys to have a field while we made up a fully kitted out position under the shade of trees. Humey had asked to open earlier in the week and I acceded to his demand setting him up with Pricey in an effort to consolidate a partnership to get us on the way. Things were looking quite good after three overs 13 runs on the board and J.K. struggling with a constrictive wide line. Then things literally took a U-turn when Pricey knicked off for 3 in the fourth. When Wazz went for 6 in the 5th over we were thinking back to run scoring ways only to be silenced again when Gav couldn't stay on top of a drive and was caught by Phil at mid off for 2. From this point on our scoreboard read more like a telephone number as only Wade was able to counterattack his way to double figures. Hume (9), Crimp (4), Foxy (3), Pickle (1), Dearsley (1), Skudz (3) and Mayo (0) pretty much all got themselves out either playing away from the body and getting caught or in the case of Skudz finally getting one straight for the bowled. Wade (18) was undone by the drinks break once again, so I may end up opening with him next week in order to maximize his time away from this dreaded event. That left Muzz stranded on a magnificent 1* in what was his day to go on to a big score if only we could support him. On the day the Card's bowlers were brilliant, they played the lines and pace particularly well, putting the ball in tempting places and drawing nine false shots from my lads. Wazz being the only bowler not to take a wicket still had the great figures of 8/2/16/0, the others... J.K. 5/1/12/3, Julian 7/4/13/3 and Brown 5/0/17/4 put all before them to the sword. Mario having an outstanding session behind the stumps snaffling 4 catches in a tidy effort.

Cricket can be a funny game as we all know so defending 60 is theoretically possible... just not on this day. I opened with Crimpy and while at times testing we couldn't generate enough opportunities to get a roll on. Spence brought up his 10,000th run for Sydenham with a perfectly executed straight drive, and celebrated with a flute of bubbles generously provided by a support crew waiting patiently on the sideline. This seemed to relax Ewen as he played each ball on it's merits on his way to an unbeaten 27. The only loss we could inflict was in the dismissal of Hardy for 9, so we weren't going to suffer more dignity disorders with a down trou! Matt Loose, came in and took control punishing my "spinners" down the ground with only the one chance which wasn't taken. Loose finishing off the target with 26* largely made up of straight drives to the boundary. So that left both teams scratching around for a couple of hours while everyone else played full games, filling in time the best way we know under the shade of those wonderful trees. But of course this was just the prelude to the nights main event held at the Wigram Skies Good Home, where speeches (both long and embarrassingly short) and trash talk were conducted in conjunction with food platters and an abundance of beverages were served, by the lovely staff at an excellent venue.

Match Reports from Sunday 10th February ...

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs East Chch Shirley @ Edgar Mac 1 (2-Day)(Day 1)

So after countless trainings, 11 games of cricket, including two Thursday games, and two Sunday games all in less than a month. It was needless to say that cricket was starting to run our lives. Still we turned up, warmed up and wanted to get up. Keeping the same team from the day before the opposition weren’t particularly over the moon when Henry had sent them out to field after fielding 70 overs the day before. M.Ling and E.Waind opened up and took advantage of what was some tired looking bowlers at times. E.Waind was happy to use it to get himself in but M.Ling was having none of that and proceeded to smash a 75 ball hundred dispatching anything and everything he wanted to towards the boundary. Lingy eventually fell for 111 (91 balls, 20 x 4's & 1 x 6) in what was the only chance I recall he gave in his innings and came into a standing ovation from the boys as well as the respect of the opposition to get what was the first senior hundred that I have witnessed in my time. Rory came in and along with Ed the pair played their own games until lunch with Ed starting to reach second gear with some beautiful lofted straight drives just reaching his 50 before the break. After lunch was a different story though with the pair bludgeoning their attack and when Rory (21) fell it wasn’t exactly the worst thing in the world as it brought J.Sukhon to the crease who in the end got 65* off 41. It seemed he could do no wrong that was until he ran out E.Waind on 95. But I’m sure he’ll tell you there was two there! Eds 95 was a little different to Lingys runs but equally impressive not losing his concentration during all 168 balls and allowing the batters around him to play with freedom. He was a bit unfortunate not to get the three figures but should be happy with his efforts regardless. J.Sukhon and S.Harish (16*) finished the innings off in style though with some big hits taking our total to 317-3 off our 60 a total the boys should be proud of although I’m sure the rest of the batters would have loved a bat on what was a good pitch prepared by Dakesy and John with the help of Ed.

With 317 on the board we wanted to make them follow on and push for some big points. With a good pitch and a lightning fast outfield, thanks to the lack of rain in the last month, it was going to be a lot harder than we had expected though. Despite N.Columbus once again getting a wicket first over the second wicket put on 96 albeit a little streaky at times until J.Dyer had a run-out after a mix-up in the middle. They then proceeded to boof it a little until Sri had their top scorer for the day, holed out for 67 to cow corner where Josh was in the action again and caught it without any trouble. S.Gillespie then came back on just before the end and burgled a couple as they decided to hit the ball straight to fielder's hands to leave them 159-5 with 18 overs to bat. With them needing 58 runs to avoid the follow on we’ll be looking to bowl well next Sunday morning to try and enforce it and we could potentially be looking at a long day in the field depending on how they want to play if we are wanting to win this one.

Sam Gillespie.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs OBC @ Elmwood 1 (2-Day)(Day 1)

Having lost the toss we were put into field on what looked like a road. OBC batted positively with Gamre booming Sloane a little at the top. This was the trend for most of the day with OBC cruising along at 4 an over for the majority of the day with the majority of the bowlers bowling poorly and the fielding standard was a bit suspect at times. Dave managed to pick up his 300th club wicket with Jacob somehow managing to hold on to a late cut at gully. Jacob was the standout bowler of the day picking up 5 for 43 off 14 overs unfortunately he had no support so OBC ended up getting 253 off their 60 overs with Sharma picking up a couple at the end. Tim Braid top scoring with 125 and just looking in a class of his own.

Coming out to bat and MP had a very cautious start with the ball moving around a bit. Ash (8) was out LBW with the introduction of spin the over before tea. After tea Eder and Collins battled along while OBC bowled tight lines eventually the pressure built and Collins (16) was out caught behind dancing down the wicket. Allcock was filling in at number 4 but unfortunately I was away getting nibbles at the time so have no idea how he batted and when I arrived back he was out bowled trying to scoop a spinner for 10. Gilly came in at 5 and was soon back in the sheds with a 3rd ball duck. 4 down for 60 odd and the team was in a bit of trouble, night watchman Sloane hooked up with Eder to start a late counter attack. Eder sweeping very well for a man of such height brought up his maiden club 50 and finished on 58* at the close of play. Sloane decided to get some revenge on Gamre putting him into the trees a few times finishing the day 38*. We are currently 131/4 after 40 trailing by 122 runs. With plenty of wickets in hand we are hoping to scrape a first innings lead.
