Hearty congratulations to MP Sporting Edge Division 1 led by Ash Reddy who won their T20 Final on Wednesday 6th February, beating Burnside-West by 55 runs at Hagley 2 after batting first and posting 142/9 then bowled Burnside-West out for 87 in reply!! Great effort from the side which saw them go unbeaten winning 11 from 11 during their T20 campaign. Match report will be included in next week's newsletter.
This coming weekend is a full one for both the Championship and Division 1 sides as they play day 2 of their current match on Saturday 9th Feb and then start their next match the following day on Sunday 10th Feb.
Congratulations to Scott Westenberg who scored his maiden MPCC century on Saturday 2nd February at Edgar Mac 2. Scotty's 109 not-out from 84 balls helped MP LBJ Div.5 to a formidable 253/2 after an unbroken 176 run partnership for the 3rd wicket. Unfortunately opponents Marist-Harewood came away with the win 8 wickets down and with just 2 balls to spare.
Congratulations to #235 Ben Mayo (2000) whose last run in a first innings 56 for the MP Sporting Edge Championship XI in their latest 2-Dayer against Burnside-West at Burnside Park on Saturday 2nd February was his 2000th "Senior A" run for MPCC. Ben is the 18th batsman to have achieved this mark for the club.
MP Sporting Edge Championship vs Heathcote @ Edgar Mac1 (T20 Semi-Final)(Loss)
We turned up on a late Thursday afternoon to face Heathcote again, this time in the semi-final of the T20 competition. Coming off the back of a 6-1 round-robin stage and the one-day trophy it’s needless to say that confidence was high, and a good contingent of supporters that had turned up were thinking the same thing and expected a victory. With M.Ling unavailable due to other commitments E.Waind was straight back into the side following his exclusion on Sunday and we were ready to go. Losing the toss we were bowling first which we weren’t too bothered about as we’d just chased down 129 the week before and if we could restrict them to something similar we were confident we could do the same. Once again N.Columbus was at his best picking up a couple of early wickets and should have a third with a caught and bowled just slipping through his fingers finishing with figures of 4-0-21-2. Jamal (4-0-25-3) who seems to have suddenly become an opening bowler also picked up one in his first two overs as well and they were in some trouble. This brought A.Shrikande (18) to the crease along with C.Grey (31) much to the delight of our own supporters who seemed more interested in cheering him on than their own team. Once the power play was over though it was straight to spin at both ends with E.Waind and S.Gillespie each bowling four on the trot. It was during their spells that the runs really seemed to dry up but only three down Heathcote had the wickets they needed to put the accelerator on. However, in trying to do so C.Grey picked out cow and A.Shrikande and N.Durham walked past theirs to be stumped sharply by Jamie behind the sticks. This left them teetering towards 100 until a good last over, including a reverse sweep off J.Sukhon, from them propelled them towards 112. A total we would have taken with open arms at the start of the match.
So with 113 to win it should have been a walk in the park for us. However, we lost regular wickets early and it wasn’t until H.Winchester and J.Chapman came to the crease that we looked to be getting back on track with a good partnership. They brought it to a run a ball for the last 6 overs which should have been easy given we had 6 wickets in hand. But, through a combination of good tight bowling, and our inability to rotate the strike we couldn’t really accelerate and left ourselves 8 to win off the last over. A particularly annoying target to have. It didn’t exactly start well either when J.Chapman was caught on the boundary first ball of the over for a very good knock of 40 off 38, including a six that would have gone into the bowls club from the other end. This left 8 off 5 and Henry pushed a single before being runout next ball coming back for a second at the non-striker's end. So 6 off 3 but when Ed was run out after keeping out a good yorker and Ryan missed one and proceeded to be run out trying to run a bye it was up to S.Gillespie to smash a six off his first ball to win the game. However, with an average of under 4 this year that was more than unlikely and he could only hit the ball into the legside and have it roll over the boundary for four leaving us agonisingly short by one run. When you end up losing by one run it’s easy to look back and imagine 20 things that you could have done differently to win the game, including overthrows, running one-short and a couple of dropped catches. However, needing a run a ball for the last 6 overs we probably needed just one good over to win the game but couldn’t do just that with some clutch bowling on their part and in the end that was the reason Heathcote took out the win. A disappointing way to end our T20 campaign in particular because playing beside the undefeated T20 Div 1 team who have their own Final next Wednesday would have been a dream come true for some of us. We will be out in strong force cheering them on though and look forward to seeing leading wicket takers T.Sharma and D.Monger, as well as prolific T20 run scorer J.Duncan, more affectionately known as “Comet”, in operation out in the middle.

Match Reports from Saturday 2nd February ...
MP Sporting Edge Championship vs BWUCC @ Burnside 1 (2-Day)(Day 1)
So with all the of the coloured clothing cricket completed we rocked up to Burnside Park for the start of a 2-dayer and the start of what was to be an important month of cricket for us in the context of the club. Currently sitting 30 points behind Heathcote in overall points we knew we needed a lot of big wins to catch up and press for that all important promotion to the Premiership Grade. Winning the toss on what was a very green looking deck we wanted to bowl. However, winning the toss was about as good as it got for 38 overs with almost all our bowlers struggling to bowl consistent lines and lengths to put their batsmen under any sort of pressure. However, to their credit the pick of their batsmen A.Heenan pounced on anything that was slightly short, wide, full or straight as well as dispatching a few good balls in the process to limit the chances of any of our bowlers settling in and getting any sort of rhythm going. He ended up scoring 132 off 116 and it wasn’t until J.Sukhon had him caught at slip by Henry that we were even in the game. The problem was at this stage the score was already at 202. The last 8 wickets fell for 62 runs largely thanks to the efforts of H.Winchester whose consistency with the ball in his second spell was rewarded with 4 wickets. S.Gillespie also burgled 3 from the other end and they were bowled out for 264. A bit of a disappointing effort with the ball initially but when they were looking at 350 at one stage you've got to take what you can get and at this stage we were definitely still in the game.
Coming out to bat things didn’t exactly start well though when given the instructions of the skipper to leave well E.Waind proceeded to leave one outside off that ended up hitting the edge of his bat and was deflected back onto the stumps rather unfortunately without scoring. This brought R.Hawes to the crease early and with B.Mayo the pair withstood what was some good bowling from Burnside early on. The pair battled and despite scoring slowly took the score up to 66 giving us a platform to kick off of and a good chance of chasing their total down. This was before R.Hawes (37) who was batting well at the time thought he could beat a deep mid on but only succeeded in putting it down his throat. Still we had 8 wickets in hand and the kind of players that could score at 5 an over and at least keep us in the game but former Merivale-Papanui spinner H.Howard had other ideas and proceeded to make fools of our middle to lower order taking 6 wickets on a pitch that was offering limited assistance to the spinners but showed the value of good lines and lengths and making the batsmen play. Ben Mayo (56) reached his fifty before looking to kick on given he wasn’t available next week but was caught straight after and by the end of the day we were reduced to 138/9. With 10 overs to bat next week we need 26 runs to avoid the follow-on should they wish to enforce it. J.Dyer and N.Columbus will need to perform some heroics for that to happen but we have seen Josh do it before and we will need it to stand a good chance of winning this game. Although having bowled them out for 54 in the one-dayers this game is far from over.
Cheers, Sam.
MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs Lancaster Park @ Edgar Mac 1 (2-Day)(Day 1)
This week we moved into the two day matches and first up we had LPW. Following a pre-match eggs bene Ash proceeded to lose the toss and got put into bat on a moist green pitch. With Zac still away on his holiday, Collins joined Reddy to open the batting. MP had a very cautious start with the ball keeping low and quite a bit of movement off the pitch early. Ash batted through to the 9th over before throwing away his start to be caught at mid-on for 4. New South African recruit Morgan on debut came in at number 3 and looked alright and batted a few overs before being bowled by a big swinger for a duck. J Eder came in at 3 and put a couple of late cuts through the slip cordon before being too cute in his shots to be bowled for 9. Gill at 4 took the smart option and got his guard checked by 2 other people to ensure there was not a repeat of the previous week. Collins and Gill put on a decent partnership before Gill thought he was playing T20 cricket hitting a few boundaries before being bowled trying to put Andy Murray over the clubrooms. Collins having battled hard (including 2 solid bruises from the brute pace of Campbell) for 26 overs decided that the introduction of the Samoan powerhouse (Toalii) was too much for him to handle snicking off in his first over for 24. Things went from bad to worse and both Wilson and PK (Pankaj Kumar on debut) were both back in the sheds early caught at short cover. At 66-7 we needed to take a gamble so Ash moved Sloan up the batting order to 9, he came out and swung hard connecting with a few and bullying the part time spin bowling on at the time. But the bowler had the last laugh as Sloan got a little greedy and holed out for a quick fire 21. Rochie batted well through the collapse and with the pitch now a road was in his element hitting a well worked 20. The dismissal of Rochie brought in probably the most underrated batter in the grade who came in to face the veteran Ben Pimm. After a late cut and pushing it around, Monger decided that today was the day for him to be a hero with the bat dispatching Pimm over midwicket and then following it up with a glorious off drive, putting on a display that reinforced Collins’ idea of opening him in the batting before the game. Unfortunately, Baker got lucky and had a ball swing away then jag back in to bowl Monger for a nice 12. MP finished on 123 all out thanks to Dave’s late cameo in a rather disappointing batting effort possibly lacking the rig and power of a unit like Joel Singer who is apparently available for selection and is in good touch after his 72.
Coming out to bowl MP were very confident with a star bowling attack and a cordon full of white brim hats. Poor Bubbles who wasn’t needed to bowl in a very controversial decision by the captain was forced to go out and open against some genuine heat. Neither of the LPW batters could see the opening spell with Heath (also under bowled) edging behind for 0. Taylor joined Stackhouse and battled through the opening spell well. Bubbles was out soon after to Wilson, probably due to being very excited to be able to finally see the ball. Hick joined Taylor at the crease and put on a master class with Hick violating Sharma’s (1-40) bowling and Taylor at the other end booming Wilson and Monger. Coming into the tea break we were battling with LPW looking like scoring 200 plus. Ash decided after tea to switch it up and bring back our openers who again kept things quiet. Following the tea break there was a long period of not much going on except for some very dodgy umpiring on the back pitch with the arguments being the only thing of interest. Eventually PK (2-28) pitched one up to remove Hicks for 37 and Wilson (2-32) managed to clean up Taylor for 50. Toalii and the Tanswell batted together for a good period and while neither seemed to enjoy facing PK battled through and put away the bad balls. A brain fade cost Toalii (18) as he flicked PK straight to Dave “the sledgehammer” Monger. Tanswell (12) was given out LBW to Sloan (2-23). Cody Campbell batted well with the tail which failed to offer much resistance when Dave (3-23) came back in to burgle it getting 3-2 in his second spell to finish off LPW for 157.
With 5 overs to bat in the evening Captain Ash was too scared to risk being on the lunch box next week so sent in Sharma to open with Jono in the second dig. Sharma having been asking to open for about 3 years decided instead to go on a fishing trip edging a wide ball from Baker for 0 so won’t be needing his kit next week. Possibly some leaving practise might help although I would probably not recommend going to Ed for that. Ash decided to come in at 3 and both he and Jono were not out at the close of play to be 3/1. With the return of a couple of BHC members we will be looking to push for a good result next week. Was great to see the ex-club legend B Rich arrive to watch the action as well as our hero Comet (who popped in after his wedding). Thanks to the LPW boys for coming back for a beer afterwards at the clubrooms.
Jono.
MP Little Brown Jug Div.5 vs Marist-Harewood @ Edgar Mac 2 (Loss)
Back into it this week, against Marist-Harewood on the no.2. This season has been a bit of a roller coaster, plenty of players (40) filling the ranks. The first innings couldn’t have gone better. The toss was won (batting) and with a hard deck and a bit of grass we opened up with Esh and Nick who took the game by the scruff of the neck. Nick was building bit by bit while Esh found his rhythm to the tune of the boundary. The opening bowler got fed up bowling left arm and had a crack with the right, which did the trick as Nick feathered one to the keeper for 7, score at 34. Scotty and Esh chipped away, the fast outfield, combined with sloppy fielding meant Marist couldn’t build any pressure. Esh skied one to cover, for a positive 46 (45). Not much to say about this next partnership, only that it lasted the rest of the innings, 176 runs in 23 overs. The only negative was that it couldn’t have gone for longer, it was textbook batting from the pair, Patto quietly nudging it about, Scotty showcasing his signature cover drive, not even 4 fielders in the covers had much of a chance. Patto not out 75 (92), Scotty bringing up his maiden MPCC ton, 109* off 84. Final total 253/2.
The second innings......the numbers paint a stark picture. Top Scorer, E.Xtra 76...the next best was their opener with 32. We let down Patto and Scotty, the bowlers lacked discipline for much of the game, simple catches dropped, and other circumstances that ruined what would have been a thrilling game of cricket. Marist hit the winning runs with 2 balls, and 2 wickets to spare. Zakir was the pick of the bowlers, 2-27 off 7. A highlight was Braydens leaping back catch at extra cover. The old adage of you only lose if you don’t learn speaks volumes about this particular game, there were many positives, Scotty’s 100 a chanceless innings. Patto not out in 3 innings on the back track. We’ll be better for this game, and look forward to better things in the remaining 8 games. POD Scotty.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.8 vs Richmond Gold @ Sheldon 1a (Win)
This week saw us at a rarely visited ground - Sheldon Park in Belfast - against fellow mid-tablers the Richmond CC Rhinos. Following the trend, we lost the toss, and Richmond put themselves into bat. Things started pretty brightly - on a rubber ducky, Sam and Masood opened the bowling, and had the batsmen under pressure early. While the wickets didn't come in a torrent, neither did the runs. Sam settled down after a couple of initial wayward deliveries to start regularly beating the the bat, and Masood was on target from the start. His one wicket was a superb caught and bowled, with the ball hit an incredible height. Sam removed one of the openers, then Jatinder came on. He was incredibly unlucky on a number of occasions, with edges flying between keeper and slip. Masood took a screamer of a catch at midwicket, though, and not soon after Jatinder got another wicket, bowled. Joel had his opportunity, and turned in an amazingly economical spell of bowling, which could have been even more special if only a couple of catches were taken. Stats to come. Charles and Aaron chipped in with 4 overs each. They were quite expensive, unfortunately, although Charles did manage to chip out 2 wickets in his opening over (much to Joel's disgust!!). Sam came back to remove one of their hard-charging batsmen, and we looked like we could restrict Richmond to a low total. However, their remaining opening batsman and another lower order player batted really well through to the end, with them ending on 209/7. So it was a total higher than we would have liked, but was probably only a par score on that ground. Would still be a challenge though. Sam ended with 2/30, Masood 1/30 and Jatinder 2/49 from their 8, with Charles 2/48 and Aaron 0/46 from their 4. And Joel? An incredible 0/4 from his 8. A fine effort.
Our turn to bat, with myself and Ricky opening - and unfortunately not off to a great start again, with myself out for 10 early on. And Masood departed early for a blob as well. From that point, however, we showed both resilience coupled with attack. Dean played a good cameo for 24 before his departure, which brought Joel to the crease to combine with Ricky who was still there at the other end. Joel especially took it to the bowlers with a number of hefty maximums, while Ricky lifted the tempo as well. And despite Joel doing his best to gift his wicket to the same guy at deep mid-on (twice), he went on to score a fine 72 off not many, being dismissed just before the end. Ricky is currently in a real purple patch, scoring his second fifty in 2 weeks, and saw us home in the 39th over - a superb 83 not out.
So a win by 6 wickets - a great batting effort, especially from Ricky and Joel, with support from Dean. And a most satisfying win against a team that took us to cleaners in our last meeting!

MP Identity Signs Presidents vs Lancaster Park @ Garrick 2 (Win)
MP ID Signs Pressies played LPW at Garrick 2 on Saturday. I won the toss and put LPW into bat. Got an early wicket with McBride out via Tonka for 5. Rangi came in and joined Matthews. Put on a partnership of 37 before Rangi (16) fell victim to Townys first ball for 3 months. Caught behind. I think he changed his mind half a dozen times before deciding on the wrong shot. Corey then came in and smashed his way to 22 including hitting the top of one of the light poles before Grunta snuck one through his defences. Horsfall (5) ran himself out and Quinn (4) gave Tonka a good return catch. 113/5 after 25 and things were looking good for us. Skip Richard Derham joined Matthews and resurrected their innings with a partnership of 74 in 13 overs to swing the momentum back their way. Nana came on late and bowled Derham (27). All this time their opener Matthews continued to score freely and coming into the last ball needed 3 to score his century. In the game of cat and mouse the cat won as Matthews hit me for a six last ball to bring up a well deserved century (103*). So LPW scored 201/6 and we had a chase on our hands considering how brittle our batting has been this season so far. Bowling wise the best were Tonka 8-35-2, Grunta 8-31-1 and Bellsy 8-12-0.
Out to bat we went. Changed it up this week opening with Adams and Moore. Got our best start of the season getting to 49 off 11 before Moore (18) fell to Styles. Next over Adams (27) was caught off Corry and it looked like the usual demise of wickets we have had all season will continue. Well it was not to be as O'Connor and Hastings got 28 more before O'Connor played on to Corry. Hastings and Rooney then shared a partnership of 55 before Rooney (26) was caught off Wayne Durham. So at 22 overs we were 132/3 and travelling ok. Hastings (44) went at 152, LBW to Bray. Rendel (12) looked very good before being triggered LBW to McBride. 182/6 off 35 and we probably had the upper hand. I joined Bellsy and we edged our way to the total getting there with 10 balls to go. Bellsy looked very good in getting 30* and I chipped in with 14*. So a very good game it was. Nearly 79 overs bowled before a result. Plenty of fun banter (Thanks Rangi), Matthews 100 was outstanding. Our chase was good and showed the benefit of 3 or 4 decent partnerships. Some fielding on both sides was very President like with a few catches bring dropped and some average fielding at times. We also trialled an orange ball which I think went very well. Certainly easier to see with our failing eyes.
