Sporting Edge MPCC News 24/11/18

Weather conditions caused mass cancellations this week with the only Sporting Edge MPCC teams getting a game being the Championship & Division 1 XI's, both of whom had dominant wins helping to keep them in the hunt for a coveted semi-final spot in their respective One-Day competitions.

Congratulations to one of the clubs english imports Ben Allcock who Saturday captained the MP Sporting Edge Championship side to a dominant One-Day win against East Chch Shirley at Burwood Park. The wicketkeeper-batsman led from the front scoring 59 from 66 balls (his maiden MPCC & Senior fifty) to help MP to a score of 257/5 and claimed 3 catches as Easts were bowled out for 132 in a very good team performance. Ben is currently standing in as captain for the injured Henry Winchester.

Match Reports from Saturday 24th November ...

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs East Chch Shirley @ Burwood 1 (1 Day)(Win)

MP Sporting Edge 1st XI were hosted by East Shirley at Burwood Park (scene of the infamous Sam Gillespie 6) in the penultimate round of the one day comp. Skip Allcock won the toss and decided to have a bat on a flat looking deck. The Pukeko’s got off to a mixed start as M Ling was dismissed LBW for 8. This brought R Hawes to the crease to pair with B Mayo. Hawes shook off some early rust to score 37 (53). This included a couple of 6s that Sam Gillespie would be proud of, however he was dismissed on the stroke of drinks to bring the two Bens together. Mayo looked on for a big score before he chipped a ball to long off to be dismissed for 44. Jamie Chapman was promoted up the order for some boofing and he didn’t disappoint by hitting a 4 and a 6 in his 14 off 12 balls. By this point Allcock had reached his 50 but he and Chapman were both out stumped off the bowling of McNicol. The last few overs belonged to S Harish who hit a boundary laden 39* (24). He was well supported by Ed Waind who ticked the strike over to be 23* at the end of the innings. MP were 257-5 off their 50. A great first half. The standout bowler for Easts was McNicol who got 4-33 with his tidy left arm spin.

Easts got off to a quick start as W Grocott raced along at a run a ball. Easts were cruising at 53/0 off 10 until Hawkins came in to the attack and took the 3 quick wickets of Grocott (32), Brar (4) and McNicol (3). Gillespie came into the attack and removed the other opener, C Arnold for 14. MP kept chipping away at the wicket column as former team hype member Josh Dyer (4/35 off 10) took 4 middle order wickets. M Moore was the only resistance with 26* but the other end crumbled as J Wilson (2-22) finished off the lower order to give Merivale the win by 125 runs. Another great team effort from the lads giving us a 3 game streak and pushing us into 3rd spot on the One Day ladder.

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs Suddenly Sydenham @ Bishopdale 1 (1 Day)(Win)

With all Afternoon cricket called off in the morning and the forecast not looking good we came to Bishopdale Park with the plan of a quick game as we needed a win to keep us in the competition. After losing the toss we were put into bat on a relatively hard pitch thanks to the good work of John the night before and some great cleaning work by experts Srinath and Ash to get the water off the covers. We opened up with Ash and Beattie. Beattie did the usual throw the bat at everything and was soon back in the sheds for 5 off 6, Ash nudged a few round but ended up hitting a loose ball straight to cover to be out for 4. Basa at 3 was cleaned up by a full toss a few balls later for a duck to find the team in trouble at 12-3. Having not been able to buy a run all season Gilly took an aggressive approach liking the across the line technique. Collins and Gill put on 52 including a rather large 6 by Collins, and made it through to drinks before Gill was bowled for 37. Bellam spent more time walking out to the middle as he “bounced over” his first ball. Having thrown away his wicket the last few weeks, Comet coming in at 74-5 decided to put in a responsible knock even starting with a hard run 3 leaving both high levelled rigs gasping for air. Comet and Collins put on 60 runs in quick time with the majority being quick(ish) singles but included a rather delicious looking straight drive off the spinner. Coming into the last 10 overs Comet took on the bowlers but mistimed one too many to be caught for 40 off 36. Collins and Sloane batted a bit with Sloane finding more fresh air than leather before he was out for 5. Collins was next to get out a few overs later for 55 caught on the boundary one handed by a 70-year-old man who didn’t even see the ball. Boom Boom Sharma didn’t really go to plan being caught for 3. But Wilcock and The Monster put on a very village 20 run partnership with the batters using the edges to great effect. Wilcock hit a quick 12 before being LBW with Monger not out at the other end on 6 boosting his average up to 18 for the season. We finished up on 198 all out off our 40 overs.

With 198 on the board we knew it was just a race against the weather to get the win. While to Sloane’s credit he was bowling with some pace he was also spraying it around a bit early. Fresh off his sabbatical year snaking us for New Brighton, Matty while still being used to lower grade wide rules got the early wickets with an LBW and a skied caught and bowled finishing a 6 over spell 2-15. Dave “The Monster” Monger and Sharma both came on and bowled very well. Dave bowled 7 overs on the trot including 3 wickets for only 9 runs. Unfortunately, with the tail coming in Dave got a little tired after his 3rd wicket so decided to pull himself off and leave the final 2 wickets to the other bowlers. Sharma has been in top form recently and bowled some very good lines while picking up 3-16 off his 6 overs. Having got rid of his long hop and starting to slip in his Doosra and Carrom ball,  Sharma is proving to be a top spin bowler in the grade.  Sloane came back in to clean up the tail and when he decided to hit the poles the game was over rather quickly with him finishing on 2-11 off 5.2 overs. Sydenham all out for 54 in 24.2 overs. Sadly, after the match we found out that the other team we needed to lose had a wash out so we need to win while LPW have to lose next week if we are to progress to the semi-finals.
