Les Angus Presentation 08/05/18

Les Angus Presentation ...

Earlier this week David Monger, Ross Hastings & Ross Patterson on behalf of MPCC paid a visit to the Bethesda Rest Home in Bishopdale where they had the privilege of presenting Les Angus with an engraved Silver Tankard commemorating his 29 years service as Patron of the Club.

Les is MPCC’s longest serving member having begun his playing days with the club during season 1969/70. Records show that he had scored at least 1841 runs and taken 112 wickets for MPCC but it’s highly likely those numbers would have been even higher had his captains at the time submitted stats for all players in the Annual Reports, unfortunately in the earlier years a lot of the time in the lower grades where Les was playing only the top performers stats were sometimes reported instead of the whole team. Les does show as the leading wicket taker in 69/70 for 3A with 20 wickets and again in 70/71 for 3C with 42 wickets and a best bowling of 6 for 40. The last time that Les’s name appears in a playing sense is in the 1978/79 report. He does however appear in the Grade Winning Team Photo’s of 73/74 (3D), 75/76 (3D), 76/77 (3D), 77/78 (3C) & 80/81 (3C).

So, obviously Les was a handy contributor with both bat and ball as a player on the field, his contributions to MPCC off the field have been outstanding .... Les served as part of the committee from 1970/71 and undertook various roles and responsibilities continuously through until the late 80’s. He was a CSCA Delegate for 16 years from 1970/71 until 86/87, Gear Custodian for 9 years from 75/76 to 83/84 and Vice-President from 77/78 to 80/81. He was a member of both the Building & Pavilion sub-committee’s that by all accounts had an enormous task getting all the required approvals from City Council and neighbours in an effort to build what is now the current Edgar Mac Pavilion. Les was awarded Life-Membership of MPCC in 1983/84 and in 1988/89 was elected Patron of the club which is a position he held for the next 29 seasons before handing over to Ray & Chris Pitcher in 2017/18. Les was a very deserved recipient of the Peter Russell Trophy in 1986/87 for his services to Suburban Cricket.

He isn’t able to get along to watch and support the current crop of players at Edgar Mac as often as he used to but rest assured having spoken with him this week he still maintains a keen interest! Thanks Les for all your efforts across so many areas of the club.
