PLAYERS NEEDED : MP Accessman Presidents are severely short of players for this Saturday's game. If you or someone you know is able to help the side out please contact Club Captain Joel Singer or email mpcricket@xtra.co.nz ASAP.
Congratulations to Darren Leigh (537) on passing 500 runs for the season on Saturday. Starting the day on 499 after just 5 innings for his MP Accessman 4A side, Darren made 38 in a 20 run loss against Richmond Gold at Nunweek Park to take his season tally to date to 537 at an average of 179. Congratulations also to Glen "Bellsy" Bellam (4021) whose 74 not-out for MP Identity Signs Presidents helped set-up a match winning total against Hornby and took him past 4000 runs scored for the club.
Mark Hume fell just 1 run short of what would have been his maiden MPCC century on Saturday. Humey was dismissed for 99 for MP Accessman Presidents in a narrow loss to BWU Foxes at Bishopdale Park. He's been in fantastic form again this season having scored 364 runs in 6 innings and his 99 saw him become the 2nd MPCC player after Jamie O'Connor (2732) to have scored 2000 Presidents Grade runs for the club. Humey's tally to date being 2049 @ 31.52 (13 x 50's, HS 99, 234 x 4's & 25 x 6's). Humey has scored 3945 runs to date in total for the club and we look forward to celebrating that 1st "Ton" with him when it comes along!

MP Sporting Edge Sen.A vs New Brighton @ Edgar Mac 1 (1 Day)(Win)
The Sporting Edge MPCC Senior A side were hosting New Brighton at Edgar MacIntosh Park and after a couple of tough losses they were looking to bounce back in style to secure a semi final berth. Skip Ryan Hawkins lost the toss and we were inserted on a bowler friendly looking track. Opener Edward Commons (3) was the first to go as he lost his off stump to Judas 3.0 (Matty Wilcock). And Eddie was soon followed back to the sheds by Knox (4) and the returnee, Bevin Rich (3). Both falling to Ryan James and Wilcock respectively. Rory Hawes was battling along patiently and was joined by Cliff "the oldman" Watts and the 2 went about rebuilding the MPCC innings. The partnership lasted 12 overs and was only broken on the the stroke of drinks as Watts left a sharp turner from M Fielding and departed for a well made 12 while being part of a key momentum shifting partnership. This brought Andy Mayo to the crease and he looked in great touch as he mixed powerful boofs down the ground with some delicious drives and cuts, however he fell for 17, caught behind off Ashby. By this point Hawes had reached his 50 and was starting to push the run rate up. He and Mitch Dimond put on a handy partnership until Hawes fell for 78, LBW to Ashby trying to be too cute. At this point Dimond really started to take over as he smashed a 24 ball 65. Including 6 sixes and 4 fours. He was eventually the last man out on the last ball of the innings, MPCC all out for 216.
The NB innings started in perfect fashion as Columbus (2-23) took the wicket of Porter with the first ball. The very next over Beattie (2-50) took the key wicket of Burrell (8). Fielding (2) was also out caught off the bowling of Hawkins to leave NB reeling at 38-3. A handy partnership from McDonald and Chivers saw a glimmer of hope. However that was extinguished as Columbus removed Chivers (45) and Gillespie had McDonald (18) caught on the boundary. Beattie then bowled Ryan "Judas 4.0" James with a ball the Seniors will remember for a long time. This left NB at 97-6 and some customary lower order burglary from Gillespie (4-17) saw NB bowled out for 111.
This win not only meant that MPCC retained the Burrell-Saunders Trophy, it also assured them a top 3 finish in the league and means their showdown with Heathcote next week will decide which team tops the one day league heading into playoffs.
Rory "the naughty boy/troubles" Hawes.
MP Sporting Edge 2B vs Hornby @ Denton 1 (1 Day)(Loss)
2B took on Hornby at Denton. We got off to a great start after losing the toss and being put in the field, with Kyle Sloane drawing a mistimed shot that was caught by Steve Devereux off the first ball. Hornby then settled in for a while, before Kyle drew a nick to Devo to make it 31-2 in the 11th over. However, things took a bit of a downturn after Kyle and Josh Dyer were rested and Dave Monger and Jono Collins took over. Dave suffered from a dodgy shoulder at one end while Jono suffered from a bad back and Dave’s dodgy hands at the other, as Hornby benefited from a few more drops. We turned to Chris McCloy and Srinath Basaboena, and Sri got us the breakthrough courtesy of a solid catch from Ross Patterson at gully. At the other end, Rosie bowled pretty well without much luck, before picking up two wickets nicked through to Devo in the last 2 overs of his 10-over spell to end up 2-40. Kyle came back to try to break a strong partnership, and finished off 2-23 off his 10 after two good spells. However, we were struggling a little with both Dave (0-46) and Jono battling, and Sri mixing his lines up. Eventually, it was Sri (2-39) who got the breakthrough again to dismiss Kennett caught on the boundary for 51. Jono and Josh finished off the innings, with Jono grabbing a late LBW to end of 1-38 off 9, and Josh 0-53 off his ten. We struggled with inconsistency, both with dropped catches (though Devo’s four, including three as emergency keeper, were welcome) and with extras, sending down a ridiculous 45 wides and 6 no balls, as Hornby stretched out their score to 242 with some good late batting.
Into bat with Ash Reddy and Patto opening up, and unfortunately the day got no better. Patto got a nasty one early. Devo stepped up to 3 and hung around a while with Ash before being caught at gully for 5. Matt Arscott looked great in despatching three boundaries in a row before getting through a shot early to be caught; Ash holed out at mid-off for 14 and Comet came and went. 5-33 in the thirteenth over. Not very good. Sri and Kyle added a few more before Sri was caught at mid-wicket for 7, and as I scrambled down from the score box to chuck on the pads, Kyle appeared having been caught at point for 4 (7/45). Nemo and Jono dug in for a while, annoying the bowlers with some solid defence before Jono returned for 1 off 34 (8/57); Nemo then tried a late cut twice and was caught in the slips for 2, Rosie nabbed a 1* and, having promoted myself to the giddy heights of 10, I was bowled by a straight one for 2 to leave us 62 all out in the 29th over.
A very disappointing day all round with few of us able to look back with much satisfaction at our efforts. Most bowlers had at least a couple of drops off their overs, but were also guilty of too many wides and too little consistency. Positives were Kyle and Rosie’s largely good spells, while Devo grabbed almost everything that came his way. Batting-wise, a few more shots on the ground seems like a good idea after serving up 15 catches in our last two games. We have much work to do to get back to the kinds of standards we’ve set in previous seasons.

MP Little Brown Jug 3D vs Sydenham All Stars @ Edgar Mac 2 (Win)
This week we played Sydenham All Stars on Edgar Mac 2. We lost the toss and were put into bat which was fine with us as we generally prefer to bat first. The wicket was looking good and was nice to bat on as Andy and Rob got us off to a positive start. Rob in particular was aggressive with the diminutive Australian blasting a big six into the trees to get off the mark. Rob continued his aggressive start before he was out LBW for a run a ball 22. Andy and Nick then accumulated well for a period before Nick was out for 22 continuing his good run of form. Kyle Bradbury then strode to the crease looking to grab the opposition by the throat with his power but just like that time in Hanmer Springs he was removed very quickly. Sam Chan also came and went cheaply before Sanjay and then Joel combined with Andy for some very useful partnerships to propel us towards a good total. Andy managed to carry his bat right through the innings for 60 not out and looked like he could of scored much more if the bowling wasn't so negative towards the end. The highlight of the innings was definitely Tom Dryden high on brownies and batting with his girlfriend watching proceeding to blast a six right out of the ground and into Ocean Fresh Seafoods down the road.
Our regular new ball bowlers Sanjay and Tom again did the business with the new ball with Tom grabbing 1 before Sanjay (3-14) ran through their middle order with some absolute seeds. His 3rd victim spent about 10 minutes walking to the crease, stretching, adjusting pads, shadow batting and curating the pitch before being clean bowled first ball. Only one of their batsmen really offered any resistance and young leggie Brayden Cottam and old leggie Ronald Khuu finished off their middle and lower order for not many runs. Brayden got himself 3-15 and Ronnie snared 2-9. Brayden also grabbed himself a sharp run out to top off a great day for the young prospect. New member Robin also bowled a tidy spell through the middle without much luck. All Stars finished all out for 73.
Man of the Match: Toms girlfriend for making us chocolate brownies.
Joel.
MP Accessman 4A vs Richmond Gold @ Nunweek 1 (Loss)
This week we met Richmond Gold, at the always...entertaining...Nunweek Park. We lost the toss, and Richmond decided to bat. Things started swimmingly, with Sam taking a wicket second ball - and in fact ended up bowling a wicket maiden. The runs began to flow a bit from there, though - it took another breakthrough in contentious circumstances from Sam to slow things down. Convinced that the batsman was caught behind, him saying it was a bump ball, supported by the main umpire, but the square leg umpire wasn't sure. After some quite heated words, it seems the umpire then conferred with the square leg umpire, who gave him out. I think. It was all very confusing and more than a little unpleasant. The end result, though, was Sam got his man. After a bit of a lull, the runs started again, as did, unfortunately, the wides. While we took regular wickets, Richmond ended on a decent 184/8 from their 40, a total which included 28 wides. Including a couple at the end which were hotly disputed, and resulted in more unfortunate words being spoken and regrettable actions occurring. Not a good way to end the innings. While all the bowlers got amongst the wickets, there were a couple of standout performances. The ever reliable Sam ended on 2/26 from his 8, and Malcolm, bowling a full quota of overs for the first time this season, proved how difficult he can be to get away, with an excellent 1/22 from his 8. Plus, we had a superb performance from young Caleb Cottom who filled in for us. He was outstanding with the gloves, taking 3 catches (one an absolute screamer diving to his right) and only letting through 2 byes.
So a challenging target to get. And it started reasonably well - an opening partnership of 40, while a little on the slow side, was the best of the season. Once the author departed (for not much) Darren joined Hari for an excellent 2nd wicket partnership of 60. Darren departed to a peach of a delivery for 38, and once he was out things fell away. Hari put together a very good 48, his highest of the season, but with the only other score of note being Faiz's 21 we were always slightly behind the eight ball. We gave it good nudge, especially considering Richmond are equal top of the table, but ended up 164/6 from our 40, 20 runs short. Which goes to show how damaging those 28 wides were - Richmond bowled with much greater control, only conceding 7. It really is something we're going to have to get under control if we want to be more competitive this season.
Cheers, Richard.
MP 4A Rebels vs Riccarton Thunders @ Polo 1a (Loss)
On Saturday we played Riccarton Thunder on Polo 1. Most of the team got lost finding the pitch. I won the toss and decided to bat first. We opened with Sam and Glen. Glen was out in the second over, Timba came out edged one to the keeper and we were 2 for 9. Flats and Sam settled in putting on 80 runs and made it to drinks going well with the score at 2 for 89. One over after drinks Flats was out for 44 lbw. Chris came in to bat with Sam who was starting to push the pace but on 70 missed one and was bowled. Not long after Chris was bowled and Rhys and we had a wee mini-collapse. Rafe and myself managed to put on a few until I walked down the pitch at the bowler trying to get the run rate going and got bowled. Hamish joined Rafe and they put on another 20 until Hamish was bowled. John joined Rafe but not long after Rafe was bowled for 30 off 32 which brought out Davina. John and Div lasted an over but John met the same Fate as a lot of us ... bowled. Div not out faced 3 balls looked solid in defence. 175/10 well short after the position we were in after drinks.
Bowling and the first ball Hamish put down a short ball above the batsman's head and got hooked for 6 but pulled his line right back and the last ball of the first over took the bail off the top of off stump. That's as good as it got we were flat in the field didn't get our lines or length right and the batsmen took to us all. It took 172 runs to get the next wicket! We only managed to get them 4 down. A great catch from Flats at midwicket to pick up a very high ball that came off the top edge. Also Rhys taking a good one on the boundary. Pick of the bowlers was Timba picking up an lbw and not going for to many. Player of the day was Sam for his 70.
Cheers, Jase.
MP Identity Signs Presidents vs Hornby @ Denton 2 (Win)
Identity signs Presidents took on Hornby at Denton 2. As per usual I lost the toss and we were put into bat on what was a rock solid track. Changed the top order a bit this week and it paid dividends. Opened with Donut and Nana and they put on an 82 run partnership before Nana was caught for 38(49). Donut followed 1 run later when he was lbw for 49(58). Stocker went for a wog 2nd ball, missed it and was bowled for 0(2). So at drinks we were 91/3. Ants joined Ice and they produced a 71 run partnership in 10 overs before Ants got bowled by a great nut for 33(32). Bellsy joined Ice and they produced a very quick and explosive 79 run partnership with Bellsy getting an incredible 70 of them. Ice fell in the 39th over for a well compiled 43(50). Bellsy ended up 74no off 38 balls. He hit the ball so clean and it was pretty to watch. His innings included 10 4's and 3 6's. So we finished on 248/5. Not a bad effort but with a great wicket and a lightening outfield we still knew that we would have to do the job in the field.
In to the field we went. Opened with Tonka and Berry. Both bowled very well and after 6 overs Hornby were 11/3. Gave Tonka a rest after 4 and brought Bellsy on. He had immediate success and after 3 overs had 2-4. Berry bowled his 8 overs through finishing with the impressive figures of 8-1-22-3. Hornby were 40/6 after 13 and things were going exactly to plan at that stage. But as we know best laid plans don't always come to fruition. Woolhouse joined Ingram and they produced a quick 99 run partnership before Grunta stumped Woolhouse (32) off Ants. 137/7 off 26 and we were still doing ok. Ingram was in fine form, hitting boundaries at will. He batted extremely well with the tail by taking most of the strike while still smashing us everywhere. They lost their 8th wicket in the 30th over with the score at 166, when Donut caught Cairns in the deep also off Ants. Craythorne joined Ingram and they got it through to 200 with 6 overs to go before Craythorne took on the rocket arm of Ice only to be run out by a direct hit. Potentially that was the winning of the game for us as they were tracking along very nicely at that stage. We managed to keep Ingram off strike long enough for Towny to catch Walker (0) off Nana to bowl them out for 201 in the 46th over. Ingram finished 133no and his batsmenship was just awesome to watch. Class player.
So a win for us after plenty of nervous moments. We were probably guilty of switching off after having them 40/6. Dropping a few catches etc. But all in all it was a fantastic game, and a great way to spend a sunny Saturday.
Cheers, Fish.
MP Accessman Presidents vs BWU Foxes @ Bishopdale 1 (Loss)
On Saturday Accessman MP played host to Burnside on the relayed surface of Bishopdale Park. Having been reliably informed that we were on a newly marked pitch (as the previous one we played on a few weeks ago had had its 4th run on the prior weekend) and that bowling first may be the way to go, I had made the contrary decision to bat first if the toss went my way, however, this time, Crash called correctly and that decision was removed anyway, into the field we went. Up to drinks it seemed as though it was a good toss to lose, I think we had them 60 odd for 3, all the bowlers doing well to contain the scoring rate against some mindful batting from the Foxes. Burnside came out more aggressive in the second half of their innings with Jeff Roy holding it together playing out the good balls and putting away the not so good, ably supported by Crash (23ish), with Marty Conway having been remarkably caught by a returned Havoc (renamed "Brokeback Mountain" after breaking his back first game last year) off the bowling of Boyce for 30 odd I think. Turner and Buchanan tried upping the tempo with Jeff and they made their way to a rather impressive 163/5. Wickets spread between three bowlers; Crimp two, Boyce two and Winz one. Gave Pricey another go with the ball and he did well for the first couple of overs then taken to on his last, but the potential is there. Paul bowled well without luck, producing false shots and beating the bat on numerous occasions and I can’t buy a wicket at the moment.
Chasing 164, we didn't start to well with O'Keefe picking up Deano for a goldy, but this made way for our superstar Humey whom has menaced most teams this year, and he certainly didn't disappoint that day. Pity our middle order must have had somewhere else they needed to be (and I think that was... as far away from Gibbo as we could possibly get) after Paul was looking good before falling for 16. A series of low ball ducks (5 of them including a first baller myself) ensued from his end setting up figures of 5/1/18/6, later to be destroyed (8/1/46/6) by Humey who took to all bowlers, sparing no one. That bowling carnage was initially stopped by the epic defensive qualities of Winz, taking it upon himself to block most things and try to rotate the strike for Hume to continue the slaughter. The reintroduction of Twaddell put pay to the Crazy frog (with only 2 runs an over needed off the last 10) holing out for 99 and with it almost any chance of us tracking down the last twenty for the win. Some excellent death bowling had us falling 14 runs short in the end Twaddell taking the spoils with a 3 for. So, a game that got a lot closer than it threatened made for thrilling watching, once again proving you’re not really out of it until you are. A little disappointed we couldn’t kick on but we gave them a hurry up and they may well feel they got out of jail with that 4 over spurt form a deserving Gibson, but looking forward to the next encounter.
Now I’m out next week so I’ll hand the reins over to Winz…
Cheers, Pickle.
