Match Reports from Thursday 5th/Saturday 7th December

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs St Albans @ Edgar Mac 1 (T20 - Win)

It's Thursday morning and Wez arises from his slumber. He waddles out to the kitchen and opens the pantry to see what he can rustle up for breakfast. His gaze rests on the half empty box of weet-bix and he decides that this is the best option given the alternatives present. He usually is a 4 weet-bix man but decides that this evening's fixture will require some energy. He punishes 6 weet-bix for breakfast. What he doesn't realise is that in consuming those two extra weet-bix he has sealed St Albans fate. In 12 hours time, Wez is going to put them to the sword and make them question their choice of hobby.

St Albans won the toss and (foolishly) elected to bat. On an excellent deck they got off to a good start with their opener making a quick 29. But early wickets were effective in slowing their momentum as St Albans slumped to 4-47. Alex and Harry accounted for the early wickets before some accumulative batting in the middle overs ensured that St Albans would post a total over 100. Wickets to Sammy G and Leo as well as two sharp run outs piled on more pressure and resulted in a score of 8/122 being posted in the 20 overs.

On a great deck this was never going to be enough. With pure Sanitarium wheat goodness coursing through his veins Wez strode out to the middle with Alex. Unfortunately, Alex succumbed to a seed pitched on 6th stump outside leg which he flicked to fine leg. Can't do much when you get a good one. Aside from this early hiccup, the rest of the MPCC innings was an absolute ravaging of a helpless St Albans attack. Wez blasted boundaries to all parts. Anything full was disrespectfully launched either for four or half a dozen. The brutal display of hitting silenced the St Albans field and they silently observed their demise. Thankfully for them, they didn't have to watch for too long. Wez finished the innings with 72 off 31 rocks and was well supported by Lingy who knocked it around for a run a ball 34. The score was knocked off in 11.4 overs securing a 9-wicket win. St Albans promptly packed up their gear and departed the ground. They were not present to hear the MPCC boys in full voice. This is just as well, it would be unethical to rub salt in such a gaping wound.

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs Sydenham @ Halswell 1 (T20 - Win)

On a scorching Saturday morning at Halswell Domain, the lads were determined to keep their unbeaten T20 streak alive against Sydenham. Captain Lingy won the toss and opted to bowl first on a challenging pitch that promised unpredictable bounce. The Sydenham openers started confidently, finding the boundary early on. But the game shifted dramatically when Leo claimed the crucial wicket of one opener, opening the floodgates for debutant Thomas Vesty. Vesty wasted no time making an impact, dismantling the top order with exceptional figures of 3 for 2, including two maidens in his four overs. Fellow debutant Max Woods joined the party, maintaining relentless pressure with a consistent line and length. Woods finished with an outstanding 2 for 8, including a maiden from his four overs. Next up, LCJ delivered a miserly spell of 2 for 4 off three overs, keeping the opposition in check. Leo returned to clean up the tail, bagging another two wickets to complete his haul of 3 for 25 off four. The result? Sydenham was bundled out for a meagre 54 runs in 17 overs—a remarkable team effort.

However, with the pitch behaving unpredictably, the lads knew the chase wouldn’t be straightforward. Openers Leo and Rory strode to the middle, ready to chase down the modest total. Leo struck an early boundary but fell for 4 to a delivery that rolled sharply. This brought debutant Max Woods to the crease, who showed composure to steady the innings. At the other end, Rory Hawes was in sensational form, putting the Sydenham fielders under immense pressure with his aggressive stroke play. His entertaining knock of 23 off 18 balls (one four, three sixes) kept the momentum firmly with Merivale Papanui. After Rory’s dismissal, Kyle Sloane joined Max at the crease. Sloaney wasted no time, dispatching the ball to the boundary three times in his unbeaten 15, while Max rotated the strike cleverly, finishing on 10 not out. The pair wrapped up the chase in just 9 overs, securing a dominant victory for the team. The win extended the lads’ flawless T20 campaign, but a stern test awaited in the afternoon: a top-of-the-table clash against Burnside at Burnside Park. With the lads firing on all cylinders, hopes were high for another thrilling encounter…

MP Sporting Edge Championship vs Burnside @ Burnside 1 (T20 - Loss)

With the momentum from a Game 1 win and a well-earned break, our squad entered this much-anticipated top-of-the-table showdown against Burnside brimming with confidence. Burnside won the toss and elected to bat first on a pristine wicket, setting the stage for a thrilling contest. Leo and Harry opened the bowling, applying early pressure, but Burnside's openers were quick to seize any opportunity. On a lightning-fast outfield, they capitalized on loose deliveries, punishing anything with width. Despite the valiant efforts of Thomas Vesty and LCJ during the end of the powerplay, Burnside continued their onslaught. A couple of dropped catches in the field only added to our frustration, allowing the opposition to build momentum. Sammy G brought his trademark spin into the attack but struggled to turn the tide, while the Burnside batters showed no mercy to Max Woods, dispatching a few boundaries to the rope. However, LCJ’s return to the crease shifted the narrative. With a gutsy spell, he claimed two crucial wickets and tightened the screws, finishing with solid figures of 2-20 off his four overs. Leo and Harry returned to close the innings strongly, picking up a wicket each to restrict Burnside to 4/164 from their 20 overs. Though the fielding wasn’t flawless, the team's late resurgence gave us a fighting chance heading into the chase.

Alex and Rory opened the innings with the pressure of a steep chase looming large. Unfortunately, the start didn’t go as planned, with Alex dismissed on just the second ball. Captain Lingy joined Rory at the crease but found Burnside’s early spinners hard to handle, departing for 1 as we stumbled to 2-6. Rory’s composed approach briefly steadied the innings, but his dismissal for 15, shortly after a towering six, left us reeling at 3-30 at the end of the powerplay. Harry entered the fray determined to make his mark. Mixing quick singles and well-timed boundaries, he kept the score ticking despite wickets tumbling around him. Luke fell for 1, and Leo followed soon after for 5, leaving us teetering at 5-45 after nine overs. The target seemed increasingly out of reach, but Harry and Max showcased grit and class to rebuild the innings. Their partnership was a lesson in calculated aggression and sharp running between the wickets. Harry anchored the innings with a fluent 53* off 40 balls, while Max matched his resilience, finishing on 52* from 42 deliveries. The pair’s valiant effort ensured we batted through our 20 overs, but the team ultimately fell short, finishing on 5/133 – 31 runs adrift of Burnside’s total.

Our first loss of the season was undoubtedly a bitter pill to swallow, but it provided plenty of learning moments. Despite the setbacks, there’s no doubting our ability to bounce back stronger. With renewed focus, we’ll take the lessons from this match into the upcoming weekend and aim to return to winning ways. And with the T20 finals on Sunday, there’s a shot at redemption and some silverware on the horizon.

Cheers, LCJ.

MP Sporting Edge Div.2 Red vs Riccarton @ Hagley (T20 – Loss)

Thursday 5th vs Riccarton Thursday night T20 action – everyone’s favourite. We were at Hospital corner (also everyone’s favourite) facing top-2 side, Riccarton Mahja Cannons. We won the toss and elected to bowl first going against the grain of typical Thursday night matches. Most of the bowlers struggled, with only Hamish Robertson managing to go for less than a run a ball, wickets were reasonably shared around with George taking 2, Beattie 1, Alex MacLennan 1, and Hamish 2. Riccarton ended up 146 off their 20 overs, given they were 88 after 11 we were reasonably happy with the chase on a quick outfield and decent pitch.

Louis and Sloaney got us off to a good start, scoring 39 off 41 and 34 off 22 respectively, but we were unable to provide adequate support throughout with Gilly (1) Ash (7) Tom Music (21 off 25) providing some support but in the end we left ourselves needing 30 off 22 balls. Beattie came in and got 10 off 6, needing 22 off the last 3, we were still in with a chance with hitters to come, but the Riccarton bowlers executed exceptionally well to restrict us to 8 runs in the final 3 overs. In the end MP going down by 14 runs.

MP Sporting Edge Div.2 Red vs St Albans @ Bishopdale (T20 – Win)

Saturday 9th vs Saints Back to normality, Saturday cricket at Bishopdale up against a Saints side who had found some form in the T20 campaign, winning their first two matches and on a hot streak. MP won the toss and decided to bowl on a slowish looking wicket, hoping to utilize our spin options. In contrast to Thursday, every bowler bar one went for less than a run a ball (our fill in superstar, Zac Medland, who hasn’t played for a few years now being the exception). Wickets again shared around, Beattie 1/18, George 2/19, Lyle 1/23, Bellsy 2/16 and Zac 2/27 (all from four overs) doing well to restrict Saints to 104.

With Sloane being called up to firsts, we started with Louis and Caleb who both fell cheaply (4 & 8 respectively), Tom occupied the crease with wickets falling around him for 16, Gilly and Ash fell for 7 & 9 but our superstar fill in Zac Medland batted really well on a difficult pitch for 34 off 32. Beattie struggled along for 6, and Bellsy, playing a classy cover drive first ball for 4, was dismissed for 7. Chasing a small target is always tough, and today was no different, we needed 5 from the final over with Zac still at the crease, 2, 1, dot, 1, one to win, job done right? Not this time, Zac dismissed by an absolute screamer of a caught and bowled bringing in another late night recruit from Friday night, Brayden Cottom. Needing 1 to win off the final ball he eased the ball gracefully down the ground for 4 to secure the win off the final ball of the match. A very much needed win for our campaign for promotion, but in fairness we probably made very hard work of this small chase.

MP Sporting Edge Div.2 Red vs Hornby @ Denton 1 (T20 – Win)

A quick stroll from Bishopdale park to Denton while Saints stayed at Bish for their second match (some strange fixture travel requirements this week throughout morning grades!). We lost the toss and were put in to bat on a typical looking Denton Park pitch which played surprisingly well. Gilly convinced Beattie it was a good idea for him to open the batting in the second fixture to try and get off to a faster start. It wasn’t, but at least he didn’t waste much time going out for a golden duck. This brought Louis and Caleb together who batted superbly, putting on 62 with Caleb dismissed at around the 8 over mark for 32 off 25. Being outside the powerplay we went to master rotator, Tom Music. Tom and Louis batted for about 5 overs, taking us to the 14th over when Tom was dismissed for 16 off 15. This 16th over was an interesting one, Tom was bowled on the first delivery, Ash was run out on the 3rd, Louis bowled (for a very well made 44 from 39) on the 4th, and 4 overthrows on the 5th delivery tamely finished with a dot. Going from 98/2 to 105/5 in one over everyone was sent scrambling applying clads to pads, figuring who was where and trying to get themselves ready, the mayhem stifling our momentum really when we were looking to up the scoring to 10 an over for the last 5. We only managed a run a ball ending up 135 off our 20.

In to defend 135, Beattie started off with a rare t20 maiden, which could have been two in a row if he could bowl straight (2 wides coming from his second over and a wicket). George had a bit of a niggle so bowled out, taking wickets in the 4th and 6th overs leaving Hornby 29/3 after their powerplay. Brayden Cottom had to leave early and unfortunately we had no sub fielder with us, so we fielded the remaining overs with 10, very hard work on quick outfields and large boundaries at Hornby!). Lyle replaced Beattie after his 3 overs and got a wicket straight away, George bowled his four in a row 2/25 followed by Bellsy who did the same, 1/25 off his four (the wicket being a spectacular horizontal caught and bowled by Bellsy), Caleb Cottom had a bowl (2 overs 1/18) as well as Zac Medland again (bowling seam up this time) getting 2/21 off 2. A bit of a strange game really, throughout the innings it felt as though we had it under control the whole way, but being a man down is never easy, and all the guys stepped up, it eventuated Hornby needing 27 off the last 3 with 2 from Lyle and one from Beattie left in the tank. Lyle bowled the 18th to Hornby captain Ravenscroft who made a very good unbeaten 52 off 40, he had decided that this was the time to go, taking 16 off the over and really putting the squeeze on us (Hornby looking for their first t20 win of the campaign). Beattie bowling the 19th going for 5 runs and managing to keep Ravenscroft away from the strike for the last over, Hornby now requiring 6. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. After going for 16 the over before, Lyle produced a masterclass in death bowling to the tail, first ball straight through the gate bowled, then a dot, then a single getting Ravenscroft back on strike, 4 to win off 3 balls, Lyle managed a crucial dot, before going for 2 on the penultimate delivery. Hornby 133, needing 3 to win from the last ball Lyle hit his spot again to only allow one run with Ravenscroft run out trying to secure the tie for his team. An outstanding team effort to pull together with 10 men and get our t20 campaign back on track with a chance of making semi-finals next weekend, but special mention to Lyle for his outstanding last over to seal the deal.

MP Burger Station Div 2 Black vs Halswell @ Bishopdale (T20 - Loss)

Our Thursday evening game saw the 3rds back at Bish. Bellsy won the toss and we opted to bowl, hoping the changing light would make things interesting later on. Shane and Hemanshu opened, with the latter back pretty quickly for 2. Darren (29) and Shane then worked the ball around for a good chunk of the innings before Darren was out with the score on 72. We lost a bit of momentum after this, with Anil (0) and Basa (4) unable to add much. Bellsy and Shane pushed the score on to 117 in the last over before Shane was out for a well made 52 off 60. Ranjith followed next ball, before we picked up a couple of wides and singles to Bellsy (14*) and Callum (1*) to leave us at 121/6 off our overs, pretty similar to our other games.

With some solid bowling options we had ambitions to put some real pressure on the Halswell batters, but the pressure evaporated when Hemanshu went for 17 off his first over and Dave leaked 16 off his second and the team’s fourth. From there, Halswell were able to rotate the strike around without too many risks. Dave (1-25 off 4), riddled with a cold and more than usually grouchy, eventually picked up our first wicket late in the chase with the score at 99, while Bellsy (0-24 off 4) bowled respectably too, but Halswell got there pretty easily in the sixteenth over. As an added bonus, the Bishopdale sniper did his usual thing, picking out Darren’s calf in the outfield early in our fielding stint – luckily hop-along Columbus was present to field out the innings at 45-on-the-one for us!

MP Burger Station Div 2 Black vs Marist Harewood @ Woolston (T20 - Loss)

With Bellsy assisting the seconds, Dave, still circling the grave, took the reins. We lost the toss and batted, opening up with Shane and Basa. Unfortunately, things just never got going for us as, apart from Shane (21 off 22), our batters found it hard to get some accurate Marist bowling away. We were 7/54 after 17 overs when Sam Coughlan departed for 7. A late flurry of sorts from Callum (12), Dave (13* off 10) and Nath (0* after Dave barbecued Callum by running through on a dot ball to the keeper, but running hard on a sketchy hammy) dragged us to 72, well short of where we wanted to be.

Into the field, and the consensus was that we wanted to remind Marist they were in a contest and take some pride in what we were doing. We opened with Nath and Jack Farries, who set the tone beautifully. Marist played their shots as they always do, but wickets in the first, second and third overs saw them at 3/15, looking a little more doubtful. Nath bowled his 4 on the trot off a short run-up, taking 2-19, while Jack was replaced by Sam after getting 1-17 off 3. Sam (2-22 off 3), bowling into the short legside boundary, had 4 boundary catchers between deep backward square and long-on, and picked up his first couple of MP wickets courtesy of an excellent catch at long-on by young Jonty Iggo (debuting for the club and looking a handy prospect in doing so) and a bowled. Dave bowled a couple of cheap overs at the other end, before being hit down the ground, seeing a catch dropped and then having the winning runs disappear to the boundary between a fielder’s legs, as Marist got there 5 down in 13 overs.

Disappointing to have given them such an easy target, but good heart in the field seemingly gave us something to work with for the next game.

MP Burger Station Div 2 Black vs Lancaster Park Gold @ Garrick 2 (T20 - Loss)

We hopped in the cars for the short commute to beautiful Garrick Park, where the mushrooms flourish in the fields and the razor wire adds a picturesque touch to the boundary. General consensus was that the block looked like a bit of a dog, so the team was happy when Dave won the toss and bowled. Briefly. Nath bowled 3 miserly overs at the beginning, but everybody else got bludgeoned, with few chances apart from a catch put down at long off by Dave. Basa (1-44 off 4) eventually got us a breakthrough with an LBW, while Sam C managed a direct hit run-out late on, but apart from Nath’s 0-10 off 4 we had very little to enjoy as Park pumped 180/2.

Skipperly words of wisdom were required at the break, so Dave advised his batsmen to be a bit braver with the running as they were unlikely to hit the stumps, and promoted Sam to 3 with license to swing hard. 3 direct hits later (including Sam run out without facing) and we were up a faecal river without an oar. Basa (18) did his best to get things going before being bowled, but things only became a bit more tolerable when Ranjith and Callum got together. Although not able to up the run rate to the level required, they did at least provide some quality, with Callum hitting his best of the season, scoring 33, before being out around the end of the 17th over. Richard had time to regret his bat before Dave (7*) managed to tear his calf taking a quick single on the last ball of the match, to bring us only 71 short of the total, while Ranjith finished up 30* off 35 and the side at 109/6. Fair to say we’re not making the T20 finals day!

MP Div 4 vs Lancaster Park @ Centennial 1 (Win)

MP won their latest Div 3 and Div 4 knock-out, posting 176 off 34 overs, with Akki Ricky picking up another half-century (56) and Suraj Khatri hitting 69. Lancaster Park could only score 154 in reply.

MP Div 6 Panthers vs Lancaster Park Royal Rangers @ Polo 3 (Win)

The Div 6 Panthers showcased their batting firepower in a commanding victory over newcomers Lancaster Park Royal Rangers at the Hagley Polo Grounds, chasing down 215 with more than 11 overs to spare. Skipper Andy A lost the toss, and the Panthers were sent into the field. The Royal Rangers, determined to make a mark, got off to a strong start on the fast artificial surface. The openers piled on 61 runs by the 13th over before Steve made the initial breakthrough, dismissing the first batter. Steve struck again soon after, removing the other opener. Roger then stepped up with a stellar spell, bowling his eight overs on the trot and claiming three crucial wickets to disrupt the Rangers’ momentum. Sunny and Isuka both chipped in with a wicket apiece despite being on the receiving end of some aggressive hitting. In the final overs, Andy A and Max returned to close out the innings, with Max claiming two scalps in the last over. The Royal Rangers finished on a competitive 215 from their 40 overs.

The Panthers faced a daunting chase but knew the lightning-fast outfield and short boundaries would be in their favour. Openers Andy R and Dean made promising starts, finding the boundary early, but both were back in the pavilion by the end of the fourth over. Max and Conner then took charge with a game-changing 126-run partnership. Conner’s innings included a towering six over long-on, however he was stumped agonisingly short of a half-century on 49, but his efforts had laid a strong foundation. Max continued his ruthless assault on their bowlers, unleashing a barrage of boundaries, including an extraordinary over where he struck six fours in a row. Sunny provided able support at the other end, contributing an unbeaten 22. Max reached his milestone, scoring his maiden century and finishing unbeaten on 106, as the Panthers stormed to victory in just 28.3 overs.

MP BBS Timbers Div 7 vs Kaiapoi @ Sheldon Park (Win)

The BBS Timbers Div 7 team were, once again, out at Sheldon Park in swanky Belfast to face the thus-far winless Kaiapoi Gold. Could we bounce back from a pretty average performance last week? Time would tell, gentle readers.

Nana failed to be triumphant at the coin toss, but Kaiapoi put us in to bat anyway on the rubber ducky. To bring some solidity into the top of the innings Nana opened up with Kieran and got us off to a great start. They were both looking really comfortable, scoring at over 5 an over, before Nana was caught for 42 in the 13th over, 66/1. That brought me in, and Kieran and I kept the run rate going before I was caught for 11 in the 17th over, 91/2. Kieran and Karim saw us through to drinks, 108/2. Karim didn’t last long after drink unfortunately, out for 6 in the 21st over, 108/3. The run rate then started to drop, and when Kieran was finally dismissed for a fine 54 in the 25th over, the run rate had dropped below 5 – 121/4. Things really slowed down after that, with only 18 runs coming off the next 10 overs. When Blake was bowled for 10 in the 34th over, the run rate was down to 4, 139/5. Amen was next to go, out for a hard fought 24 in the 40th over. Pav and Barrel hit 12 runs off the last over, and we ended on 173/6. Considering where we were at drinks, and that we were only 6 down, we felt we were at least 30 runs short. However, if we bowled and fielded well, 173 was still a very defendable target.

Opening up with Barrel and Pav, we immediately had them under pressure. It was too much pressure for Barrel, as it turned out, as he pulled some kind of muscle somewhere and couldn’t complete his first over, with Nana trundling in still with his pads on to bowl the last ball of the first over. Frosty took over from there, and both he and Pav, while they couldn’t break through, really strangled the runs. It took until the 9th over, with only 17 runs on the board, for Frosty to make the first breakthrough. Goutam was the next to strike with a fine c&b in the 16th, and Kaiapoi were struggling to stick with the required run rate, 47/2. They went into drinks 65/2, a long way behind with the runs, but with 8 wickets in hand. We were beginning to look a little wobbly in the field as well, with catches going down and misfields costing us runs. Ayan made the next breakthrough in the over after drinks, 67/3. Goutam came back into the attack and almost immediately removed their captain who had been scoring the bulk of their runs – 103/4 after 26. We then started to take our catches. Nana brought himself into the attack and struck in his first full over, 105/5. And again in his second, 114/6 after 29. It then started to get a bit tight, with the runs coming quite easily. It’s also when the tablet mysteriously lost power, so this is where the report becomes a little less detailed sorry. The game changed in our favour when the batsman looking most likely to win it for them was run out with some good fielding from Amen and Nana. The required run rate then really started to rise, and their remaining batsmen weren’t up to the task. Nana got another, Frosty came back into the attack and polished them off 11 runs short of the target in the 39th over – 162 all out. Pick of the bowlers was Frosty with a superb 3/7 from 7.4. Nana returned 3/28 from 5.1, Goutam 2/33 from 7, and Ayan 1/40 from 6. Pav bowled well with no reward with 0/25 from 8, Blake had 0/12 from 6 and Kieran 0/14 from 2. Sam’s .5 of an over didn’t concede any runs.

So in the end a win is a win, even against a bottom team. However, our fielding and catching wasn’t the greatest, although we did finish strongly with the catching. And our bowling lost some of its accuracy after drinks, allowing the batsmen to score quite freely.

Now for the all important scorecard:

Batting: B. Jamie and Kieran got us off to a great start, but the middle/end overs dragged us back, and we ended up probably 30 runs short.

Bowling: B. First 20ish were really good, but we lost some accuracy from there, letting them score quite freely.

Fielding: B-. An improvement from last week at least, and there were some very good catches taken. However, there were also a number that were grassed, and our ground fielding leaked some runs too.

Cheers

Richard
