Every Friday evening during the season, MPCC is selling meat raffles at our sponsor, The Brewers, in Merivale. All teams will take a couple of turns doing the selling - this week the Championship side are on selling duty. All club members are encouraged to head down at 5.30 support the raffles and our sponsor and get in some pre-match predictions for Saturday's games.

Chairman's Cup draw

A further reminder that we have been drawn to play St Albans in the first round of this season's Chairman's Cup, with the fixture scheduled for Sunday 24 November at Edgar Mac 1. The side will be led by Rory Hawes - if you're keen to be considered for selection, and haven't already done so, please let him know urgently.

MPCC Golf Day - save the date

This year's golf day has been scheduled for Sunday 26 January - further details to follow, but keep the date free!

Congratulations to BBS Timbers Div 7 skipper, Jamie O'Connor, who scored the club's first century of the season vs Southbrook, with his 120* setting the platform for his team's victory. This was the sixth century of Nana's MPCC career.

Congratulations to Sporting Edge Championship player Leo Spilsbury, who followed up his first club 5-for on 2 November by scoring his first club half-century last week. Leo's 77 off 96 balls helped set an imposing target for Heathcote.

Congratulations to Wez Masterson, who also scored his first club half-century in the same game, smashing 55 off 31 balls for the Championship side.

Congratulations to Burger Station Div 2 Black's Shane Wills, whose 77* vs Lancaster Park was his first club half-century. Shane batted from the first ball of the innings to the last to steer his side to a draw after Lancaster Park set a high chase earlier in the day.

Congratulations to Suraj Khatri, our fourth first-time half-century maker for the club of this week, who scored 65 off only 32 balls for his Div 4 side in their victory over Marist Harewood.

Congratulations to NWY 1st XI skipper, Brayden MacLeod, who scored 64 off 71 against Timaru Boys' High, unfortunately in a losing cause.

Congratulations to Jessie Milne, who brought up his 50th wicket for NWY 2nd XI during his side's win over Rangiora.

Congratulations to Luke Spicer, who scored 55 in his Year 9C side's defeat to Mt Hutt.

Match Reports from Saturday 9th November

MP Sporting Edge Prems vs Heathcote @ Edgar Mac 1 (Two Day – Day 2: 1st innings win/draw)

Day one saw Matt win the toss and decide to have a bat on what looked like a very good wicket at Edgar Mac. The team got off to a very solid start with some great stroke play against the new ball. Lingy hit a solid 30 from 44 balls and looked in control be fore he unfortunately smashed one straight to cover. Alex made a superb debut half century in quick time making 54 from 60 ball faced. Unfortunately, the middle order failed to fire apart from a patient 21 from 70 deliveries from Roz, who was the only middle order player to contribute anything of note. Considering the start and being 1/78 we were all out 141 of 47 overs and fair to say just not good enough.

In the field a little earlier than we would have liked, we pressed for early wickets. The new opening combination of Leo and Hary took a few overs to hit their stride but once they did the pair decimated the Heathcote batting order Leo returned match best figures of 5/40 of 12 well supported by Harry who at times was unplayable returning 2/25 off 11. LCJ chipped in with a cheeky 2/3 off 3.4. Robbo chimed in with a wicket at the end, but fair to say the damage was done by the seamers up top. Heathcote were never allowed to get going. Pleasing to say this was a very complete performance, Heathcote all out for 77 off 30.4 overs.

This left about 16 over to play day 2 and the weather had turned on its head from a fine sunny day to blistering cold southerly. Needless to say the more experienced statemen in the side (Lingy and Pipes) weren't really having a bar of putting the pads on. Stevo was promoted to open with Alex, with Leo and LCJ on stand by! Louis soaked up a lot of ball but was unfortunately out in around the 7 or 8th over. Leo was sent into the breach. Alex again looked very good, playing freely but lost his wicket for 26 with about 6 overs left in the day. Not a word was said by the captain and LCJ was running down the stairs! The two young fellas braved the cold and some fiery bowling to be fair from Finlay Testa (I think) to see the day out at about 2/40 and a decent 100 + lead going into day 2.

Day 2: Cracking day of sunshine and the scene was set. LCJ and Leo returned to the crease. After doing a great job the week before LCJ got himself off his pair but was bowled for 6. Some might argue that there was a 70% chance of controversy when a loud appeal for caught behind was denied. However, there was no denying the superb knock of our English import Leo, at times played the bowling with disdain, shots all round the ground it was a pleasure to watch with a knock of 77 of 94 balls. Lingy again looked in good touch hitting the ball cleanly from ball one making another solid contribution of 35. But the show stopping knock came from Wez, Swaziland's finest, who hit some absolutely bombs, smashing 55 off 31 balls and considering he got to 40 off 15, some accused him of dropping off the pace. Harry chipped in with a tidy 22* off 26. We declared at lunch 7/238, to set Heathcote 303 of 65 overs.

In the field....well it was a frustrating day compounded by some uncharacteristic errors. Leo struck early with the new ball and we felt like we had the attack to knock over the opposition. However, credit where credit was due, although a bit streaky at times Josh Jones made a very good 105 and was well supported by the middle order. To our credit we didn't ever give up the ghost and stayed focussed knowing we only needed a couple of key breakthroughs and there was a lot of time left in the match. Heathcote were well in the chase at 5/232 but with 17 overs left in the day they need about 100 runs and that was beginning to become a stretch. At the end of the day, Heathcote survived the day and finished on 8/270 and the match ended in a draw. We certainly created enough chances to win the game, but put down a few crucial catches at key moments that ended up being the difference. Sammy G was a standout with the ball returning 4/62 ( could have had a couple more), Leo 2/39 off 13.

MP Sporting Edge Div.2 Red vs Marist Harewood @ Bishopdale (Two Day, Day 2: outright loss)

MPCC Div 2 Red came to fight on day 2 against Marist Harewood at Bishopdale park, a long way behind on day 1 (171 behind), Marist swiftly enforced the follow on. We welcomed George Devine (club debut) and Hamish Robertson for the first time this season, and the return of Louis Stevens and Kyle Sloane after appearances for the first team last week. The message for the day was clear, bat long and earn ourselves the right to hopefully force a small chase later in the day.

Ash and Louis started us off well, negotiating the first 14 overs well before ash was dismissed for 5 (40 balls). Contrary to the game plan, the naturally agressive Kyle Sloane batted at 3 and looked good until he didn't, trying to nudge a single on the final ball of the 26th over, only to get a leading edge, out caught for 31 off 39. Louis was next to fall in the 31st for a well made 34 off 98, looking pretty comfortable but not quite kicking on to get a big score. Gilly and Basa got us through to lunch, again both very patient until Gilly was dismissed in the 51st over for 35 off 74, bowled to a shortish delivery that stayed down, the pitch beginning to play some tricks, but 4 down in the 51st we were reasonably happy. Unfortunately for Robbo he didn't manage to stick around for too long, snicking off to first slip in the 57th over, which started a wee bit of a fight back from Marist, Basa falling in the 61st for a very good 33 from 95, and Beattie unable to stick around much longer dismissed in the 67th for 10 off 14. The rest of the lower order battled hard, led by George Devine on debut for 5 from 34 (also turning Nath down for his 200th club run late in the piece), George was supported briefly by Lyle (2 off 10) and Nathan 0 not out.

All said and done, we were all out for 192 in 78 overs, taking things deep into the last hour, we set Marist a small target of 22, which was not well defended with the batters going after Beattie, a bit of a roll of the dice opening with spin, which was economical from Robbo but no wickets for the MP boys, going down by 10 wickets. A couple of key highlights for us were digging in and making Marist bat again, forcing them to take a second new ball, which is very rarely seen in my experience playing morning grade cricket (I think I recall only one or two other times I've been in a game where this has happened) - a number of guys doing a huge amount of hard work, but just falling short of really kicking on and getting well into the 3 figures for balls faced, or a anchoring 70-80 type score to give us something to either fight out for a draw or if earlier in the day, dangle a carrot to potentially win. Not for us this time, but onwards and upwards for OBC this Friday.

MP Div 2 Black vs Lancaster Park Lions @ Lancaster Park (Two Day, Day 2: first innings win/draw)

Div 2 black travelled back to Lancaster Park this week for day 2 feeling pretty good about things after plenty of toil on day 1 left us with a 27 run head start. Fielding first I thought if we could get a couple of poles early we could really see what LP were made of defensively and apply some pressure to their lower order. Funny game cricket sometimes and the best laid plans etc etc don’t always come to fruition. We opened up with Muscles and Dr Dave and the LP batters took a liking to things straight away. They played aggressively right from the get go and after 4 overs had wiped away the arrears and set about building a lead. Dr Dave created a couple of chances bowling into the wind but we were unable to capitalize and after 8 overs LP were racing along on 65-0. Double change in the bowling didn’t slow the rate up much but we finally got the breakthrough in the 12th over with the lead already 67. It was basically more of the same right through the innings with all bowlers bowling 4 good balls an over then letting ourselves down. LP finally declared on 275 for 5 with Muscles picking up a couple in his second spell. Bellsy and Dave bowled the entire allotment into the wind, Dave without luck and Bellsy dragging his aging frame through 14 on the trot for 3 for 47.

LP had basically batted us out of the game but we were hopeful if we got a good start then with Muscles and Darren’s heroics of week one we could chase a few in the last 15. The game turned a little sour with a caught behind appeal not upheld then descended into chaos when 9 or 10 of their team surrounded Muscles, name calling and being aggressive. After about 15mins of Bellsy trying to talk to their captain we finally played some cricket. LP bowled well and had Callum earlyish, then Shane and Darren batted cautiously until Darren tried to save wear and tear on his bat thrusting a pad at one. Ranjith was late for an appointment it seemed and tried to launch his second ball into the middle of next week only to survive a few more before falling, which brought Caleb Cottom, playing his first game for the season, to the crease to join the rock which is Shane at the other end. The pair got us through drinks and with the total, and if I'm honest opposition attitude, a bridge too far we shut up shop only capitalizing on the freebies dished up by the now part-time bowlers. Caleb got through to 23 before being caught and Bellsy came in at 6 and got 11*, but the undoubted star of the show was Shane who batted brilliantly for 77* out of our end score of 145 for 4.

So, not the result we turned up for and I think if we’re honest with ourselves our fielding was pretty bad but awesome to see that we didn’t go meekly with the bat and saved the game for a draw. Player of the day was Shane for his 77*.

MP Div 4 vs Marist Harewood @ Edgar Mac 2 (Win)

Doon Tigers were against Marist Harewood at the same ground where we were playing our third game of the season. So we knew about the pitch and conditions. Looking at the last two games won by Doon Tigers while chasing, there was no hesitation in opting to bowl first again after winning the toss. Vansh and Akki opened the bowling attack with a maiden first over by Vansh. Akki got the first breakthrough in his third over and Marist were 20 for 1 after 6 overs. First bowling change done by the captain Suraj himself and second bowling change done by birender.

Bittu got the second breakthrough by delivering an exceptional delivery that bowled Shyam in his second ball. Some good bowling and good fielding pressure was increasing and Marist lost their 3rd wicket in the 17th over but manged to get to 70. Just after adding 14 runs they lost their 4th and Ashish Bisth got his second wicket. Before the drinks break the score was 95 for the loss of 4 wickets.

Our planning now was to restrict them under 150. Our main strike bowlers were back for their second spell. Akki got another wicket in his first over of second spell. Another bowling change by the captain and this time again to a mystery spinner Abhi. He didn’t start well though because he got hit for a six in his first ball and 4 runs in his last ball of his first over. The captain showed some faith and gave him a couple more overs. Score was 138 for 5 after 28 overs.

Abhi got his first wicket in his third over. Captain Suraj put himself on bowling attack again and got a breakthrough and got his first wicket. The score reached 147 for the loss of 7 wickets. Abhi got two wickets in the next over and then got their last wicket too. Marist bowled out for 151.

When Doon tigers came to bat Captain Suraj and Om Prakash opened the innings. Before the opposition could think about anything Suraj started his hard hitting, smashing 6’s and 4’s all around the ground. Suraj smashed three long sixes to their main strike bowler in one over. Suraj scored 65 off 32 balls, hitting 5 sixes and 8 fours before he got out. This was a very comprehensive win by doon tigers and easily managed to get 152 in just 24 overs.

It was our third straight win, and the players were very happy about it. Suraj's all-round performance with both bat and ball was stunning and Abhi’s mystery spin was also the key for this comprehensive win.

MP Div 6 Panthers vs Southern Districts @ Waltham Park (Win)

Opting to bowl after winning the toss, Panthers bowlers Max and Andy A applied immediate pressure on the SDCC openers, who adopted a cautious approach. Max was the first to break through, dismissing the dangerous Darcy for just 8 runs. Isuka, who replaced Andy A, soon made an impact of his own, claiming his first club wicket with a plumb LBW. A few overs later, he struck again, as Charan, fielding at point, took an impressive one-handed catch. SDCC’s Ross was the mainstay for the SD side, playing aggressively and steadily accumulating runs. Panthers spinners Conner and Ash faced a challenge containing him, but eventually Andy A came back on and bowled him for 92. Sunny wrapped up the innings in the final over, taking two wickets to bowl SDCC out for 158.

With a few of our regulars missing this week, the Panthers shook up their batting order, sending Dean and Conner to open while usual opener Andy R moved down to bolster the middle-order. However, the plan backfired initially, as both openers were dismissed in the first over, leaving the Panthers in a precarious position. Max and Andy R joined forces at the crease, and their partnership turned into the foundation for the Panthers’ win. Displaying remarkable patience and composure, the pair ran well between the wickets, accumulating singles and twos as boundaries proved elusive due to tight bowling. Under the heat, they showcased grit and determination, steadily closing in on the target. In the 33rd over, Andy R decided to accelerate, going down the ground several times. His efforts eventually ended at 71 when he was caught at cow corner. Needing 20 runs off the final 7 overs, captain Andy A entered the fray and, alongside Max, finished the game with an over and a half to spare. Max remained unbeaten on 62, with Andy A on 10. The Panthers celebrated a well-earned first victory of the season, marked by a commendable bowling display and a gritty, match-winning partnership between Max and Andy R. The team will look to build on this performance next week.

MP BBS Timbers Div 7 vs Southbrook @ Sheldon Park (Win)

The BBS Timbers Div 7 team were back at swampy Sheldon Park for the second week running, this time up against the other Southbrook team, the Warriors. After a string of disappointing results we were determined to congregate our excrement, especially in relation to our fielding, and get the first win of the season. Captain Nana lost the lost for the first time, but the Warriors put us in to bat, which we would have done anyway, so let’s call the toss a draw. The swamp from the previous week had mostly drained, however the grass hadn’t been mowed at all, so it may as well have still been under water.

Anyway, we opened up again with myself and Nana. We got off to a steady start before I was out for 5, 18/1. Pav came in for 2 balls before heading back again for a blob, 18/2. Muthu hung around for a bit for his 7, reducing us to 38/3. When Tim also went for a blob, Amen for 4 and Goutam also for 0, we were in some trouble at 46/6. Sam stuck around supporting Nana for a while which got us through to 77 before he also departed, and we took an early drinks in deep schtuck, 77/7. Nana was still rollicking along, however, and after drinks he and Frosty put on a hugely important 56 run partnership before Frosty was out for a hard fought 22, 133/8. Shaun came out for a bit before his leg fell off (it may have been a calf strain, but that doesn’t sound as dramatic) forcing him to retire crippled. Which brought Blake to the crease – and he and Nana saw us through to 182 before Blake was out for 7. With only 1 over remaining, and Shaun not returning, that ended our innings, leaving Nana 120*, the first ton for the club this season.

So while Nana’s magnificent innings was obviously the shining light, there were a number of extremely important contributions from others that meant partnerships with Nana were maintained for almost the full 40 overs. And considering we were 77/7 at drinks, 182 was a superb final tally.

So Southbrook had 183 to win. Once again, if we bowled and fielded well, it was a total that should have been difficult to overcome. Sam and Pav opened the bowling, and while it wasn’t a fast start, Southbrook started off with good positive intent. We were unable to make an early breakthrough, and so Blake and Frosty were brought into the attack. Even then it wasn’t until the 12th over before Blake (“Warney”) made the breakthrough, removing the more dangerous opener to a fine catch on the boundary by Amen. You read that right – WE TOOK A CATCH. 44/1. But wait – there’s more. 2 overs later Blake removed the other opener thanks to an absolute  screamer of a one handed catch by peg leg Shaun – 61/2. And when Pav came back into the attack and had another caught on the boundary by Frosty, we were well and truly in “dafuq?” territory – we were actually holding on to our catches, and they were not simple ones either. 66/3. Southbrook went to drinks 77/3 – same run rate as us at that point, but only 3 wickets down. We weren’t finished yet however. Tim had gone down in a screaming heap in the outfield, and so was fielding in close. Yet he still managed to pull off a magnificent catch to reduce Southbrook to 91/4 after drinks. Things started to get into squeaky bottom territory after that. Southbrook’s batting was solid, and they were keeping up with the required run rate. It took Sam coming back on to make the vital breakthrough, reducing them to 131/5 in the 26th over. Blake struck again in the very next over, with yet another catch in the boundary by Pav, 134/6. Southbrook then lifted the run rate, and it took a bit of Frosty magic to get the next one with a caught and bowled, 163/7 after 32. 20 runs required. Frosty struck again in his next over, 166/8. And when he took his 3rd in the 36th over, it really was down to the wire. 172/9, 11 required. Frosty wrapped things up in the 38th over, with yet another catch, this time by Blake in close.

So our first win of the season by 4 runs. Frosty headed a good team bowling effort with 16/4 from 6.2. Blake was in fine form with 41/3 from 8, and Pav 24/2 from his 8. Sam chipped in with 37/1 from 8. Nana brought himself in and bowled well for his 13/0 from 3, Muthu was 13/0 from 2 and Goutam 26/0 from 2. But the story of the day was our fielding. We went from not being able to catch a cold in our previous outings to having Velcro hands. Only one catch went down, but that would have been a blinder. And we let very few runs through with our ground fielding. A huge turnaround.

So for everyone playing at home – our report card.

Batting: B+. While Nana’s score was the only one truly of note, there were a number of vital partnerships that allowed him to get to his score, and therefore the challenging total.

Bowling: B+. 9 wides & 2 no balls, so generally pretty disciplined. Even when Southbrook looked to be getting on top our bowlers stuck to their guns and kept snaring regular wickets, so always kept us in the game.

Fielding: A. A huge improvement from our previous games – night and day, in fact. Some stunning catches, and solid ground fielding. The standard has been set for our future games.

Cheers

Richard

MP Masters vs Sydenham Hospital @ Sydenham 2 (Win)

Hospital hosted MPCC at Sydenham 2 on a day that was threatening to get very hot very quickly. Early on, when the conditions were still pleasant, P.K. won the toss and had no hesitation in putting the 10 player Sydenham team into the field. Verma and Bell sent out with some explicit instruction to assess the pitch and play accordingly. Rakesh took that as an invitation to upset opening bowlers, in this case Rahul and Frank, teeing off first ball, depositing it over cow for a maximum and following it up with a straighter lofted drive over mid on for another boundary, Rahul conceeding 13 in the first, Rakesh then took 8 off Frank in the second with more belligerent play before entering a relative calm patch and Walsh getting the breakthrough when Verma played across the line, first ball of the fourth, missed and was adjudged LBW for 22 (13). Circumspect would be the description of play for the next 12 overs. Hume and Bell batting in tandem, pressuring the field and teasing the slip cordon, McKinley being particularly unlucky as the score moved steadily upward. A change at the northern end that introduced Hampton, resulting in the next wicket, Hume, with an ill advised lofted cover drive, finding a diving (may also be described as falling) Crawford who, to fielding teams surprise, held on to the speccy and had Hume heading off with 35 (48) to his name and MPCC 67/2 at the end of the 16th. Crimp joined up with Bell to negotiate the 4 overs to reach the break with a 77 team score. Reports from the middle indicated the surface was playing a few tricks that the bowlers were making use off and it was only going to get harder. The pair battled on into the 29th over when finally Wrik induced the mistake from Bell, accepting a return catch when hard hands got the better of Simon's technique. A patient inning concluded at 24 (60) with 112 on the board. Pickle in next, batting in the fourth different position for the season, continuing with the assessment phase found the going particular tough, thankfully Crimp was done with that and was expanding his shot selection which was starting to pay dividends. The pair were able to exploit the gaps in the field and turning strike over with a plethora of singles and two punctuated with a strong Crimp game down the ground. This effort was terminated with the reintroduction of Muks, who knocked Crimp over trying to give himself room for another bop over the top, bowled for 47 (58), MPCC at 137/4 half way through the 33rd. This sparked a collapse as MPCC lost 5 wickets in a short span, first being Ravi (5) trapped infront by Hampton in the next over, the over after that Rahul backed up with a double, smashing Cartmell's (1) stumps and then yorking Dearsley (0) to have the middle stump cartwheeling towards Reynolds in the keeping position. A couple of overs later an ambitious tight single found Frankie (0) short of his ground as a direct hit from Wrik found the mark, consigning MPCC to 153/8 at the 37 over mark. Then Mendis (2) fell trying to hit out, Muks picking up his fourth wicket when Gilling comfortably pouching at Mid on, 165/9 end of the 39th. Pickle, still not being able to get Hampton away, could only muster 3 off the last over as the previous 4 balls all found close in fielders, leaving P.K. the last ball which he didn't get out on. Steve retiring to the much needed shade unbeaten on 25* (36), MPCC 168/9 which, on reflection, was going to take some beating on a wearing pitch and the heat being turned up.

Hospital, opened with McKinlay and Danenburg, had their own period of feeling out, negotiated the opening pair of SVG, Dearsley (retiring from the crease after one over when the friendly fire multiple bullet throws from midwicket resulted in mass swelling of fingers and the inability to grip the ball) and Mendis, living on the edge much like MPCC did in the earlier innings, Sydenham making their way to 50 at 16. It wasn't until P.K. bought himself on did the pressure result in some inroads, McKinlay being first to go, bullying Kapralos down the ground only to be intercepted by Cartmell picking up his first catch for the season, a good looking innings curtailed at 26. Hampton (1) driving Petros to cover picked up handily by Crimp, then Danenburg (26) pulling to Hume off P.K. after drinks reduced Hospital to 64/3. A small partnership from the brothers Murkerjee frustrated the MPCC bowlers as both Kokiri and Kapralos searched for the next break, bowling well with great variation that wasn't conductive to stroke play, Kapralos especially extracting variable bounce to keep the batters quiet. Mendis bought back for the 30th over got the all important wicket of Rahul, nicking off to Bell for 3, followed up with Wrik (16) LBW by returning Pickle. Throwing in Prasanna (1) skying Mendis to SVG in short, Hospital being set a harder target at 85/6 at 34. Crawford looked positive, combining with Reynolds for a quick 10 run partnership, Hume and R.V. setting up the play to dismiss Mark for 6. When Frank was dismissed being defeated by a great throw from Cartmell in the outfield, the turn for two was just a bridge to far when Bell whipped off the bails Hospital now at 96/8. This just left Gilling and Reynolds to try to hold out for the last four overs, Reynold, not being one to give it away, extended his personal score to 11 giving Gilling the last ball of the 37th to see out. Unfortunately for Matt, he got one honing in on the stumps that was missed by bat, thumping the pad, Sydenham finished off at 103.

A tough surface to judge that required luck and patience in equal measures to play. Individual highlights: Verma 22, Bell 24, Hume 35, Crimp 47 and Van Grunsven 25*. R Murkerjee 8/0/40/4, Hampton 8/2/31/2. McKinlay 26, Danenburg 26, W Murkerjee 16 and Reynolds 11*. Kapralos 8/2/13/3, Mendis 8/3/11/2 and Van Grunsven 8/1/32/2. The teams eventually getting together after an extended fines session for a quick drink before the heavens opened up with a refreshing dump of rain and scattering of players.

Cheers, Pickle.
